Johnson & Johnson Enterprise Architecture Analysis Assignment
Answered

Goal of Assignment

Johnson and Johnson is mentioned on page 40 of our EAAS textbook. Please read online lectures and the first two chapters of Enterprise Architecture As Strategy: Creating a Foundation for Business Execution before working on this assignment.

This first assignment will help you practice the sort of research you will need to do in order to create a first-rate Term Project. You should use your own words to talk about J and J’s enterprise architecture.

You will research Johnson & Johnson (J&J) and identify:

-J&J’s major business divisions

-J&J’s core competencies

-The processes supporting them, and

-What you think are the main enabling technologies (You must justify your choices with reasons)

Based on your findings, try to identify J&J’s current operating model. For extra credit, create a basic core diagram with your findings.

Aside from our textbook, you can look at the J&J website, and any publicly available information, such as annual reports.

-Content 60%

-Research 10%

-Exposition 20%

-Resource Selection, Use and Citation 10%

This first assignment should take less time than the subsequent ones, as its purpose is to get you started with some solid skills to support assessing the operating models of companies, and to accumulate the evidence you need to construct your EA artifacts, most notably the Core Diagram, a fundamental EA artifact.

-Using your own words, provide Johnson & Johnson (J&J) company’s background. Identify its main business units (lines of business) and charitable services (if any) and explain what they do. Identify:

*Specify if they are unit-specific or shared across business units. An example of a J&J customer could be a hospital.

*Data they may generate. Specify if it is business-unit-specific or shared across two or more business units.

-Provide at least 10 of what you think are J&J’s everyday processes (companywide-capabilities) that the company has to get right in order to stay in business (e.g. discrete manufacturing) and/or respond to market opportunities. Explain. (An example of an everyday process would be Order Fulfillment. Hint: it helps to go through each business division and think about what those processes would be for that business division)

-Describe at least 4 technologies you think J&J will need to have in order to support the everyday processes you stated previously. You can see this as the linking technologies used that enable the integration of application and allows access to shared data (e.g., MRPIII  system). Is the technology you identified used to automate a process? Does it function as a link to allow data sharing? Or is it used to integrate processes?

-Create a matrix with your findings. Showcase how they are shared (or not) with other units. Be as specific as you can. Consider this format:

-Decide which operating model is the best fit for J&J. Justify your decision.

Please do not attempt hybrids or the Unification operating model for this assignment – choices are Diversification, Coordination, Replication.

-You will study core diagrams in more detail soon, but based on the operating model you selected and the information you have provided so far, sketch out the core diagram for J&J to the best of your ability. Note that the core diagrams shown in chapter 3 of the textbook may not be very helpful! Do the best you can.

For this assignment only, don’t spend a lot of time making the diagram look pretty in PowerPoint or other tools; a hand-drawn legible diagram that is scanned and uploaded is fine. If you decide to use a software drawing tool, then paste your core diagram into your assignment. We recommend that you paste the object as an image, so that you can resize it to fit. Don’t forget to provide legends for your diagram that identify each object presented.
