The Module aims to prepare students to:
Complete and present an advanced (Master’s level) research-focused dissertation on an issue (question) appropriate to the relevant Master’s degree being sought.Develop the above dissertation in an academically cohesive fashion, and as appropriate, documentation/presentation of results.
Integrate and apply, in a productive and disciplined manner, within the dissertation, some of the concepts, insights, information and skills obtained from or derived within other Modules of the relevant Master’s degree.Demonstrate the relevance of ethics of research within the dissertation.
The dissertation must be approached very differently from other practical tasks, projects or coursework’s that students have encountered on the programme. One of the major challenges of the dissertation is how you (the student) schedule your work and ensure that it does not get pushed to the back of the queue behind other set activities. The dissertation module has a significant contribution to your Masters programme so it is important that your chosen topic is based on something you find interesting and challenging.
On successful completion of the dissertation, students should be able to demonstrate several or all of the following key abilities Develop a Master’s level piece of research, which demonstrates a level of originality and investigative/analytical skills, while ensuring it proceeds beyond the presentation of a synthesis of material, derived from primary and/or secondary sources.
Critically appraise an appropriate research strategy including ethical considerations and data collection methods to investigate a problem germane to disciplines encompassed within the Master’s degree being sought and/or the pathway specialisation sought Demonstrate ability to resolve an appropriate research-focussed issue or question,culminating in the making of recommendations and/or policy contribution(s).
Generate a research dissertation that reflects in a multi-disciplinary and integrative way,some new elements within an appropriate area and/or discipline Collect, analyse, present and evaluate primary and/or secondary data as part of the selected research strategy.Demonstrate competent use of relevant analytical tools and techniques, theoretical and/or conceptual frameworks and literature sources within the context of the treatment of an appropriate research problem.Critically review, the completed research dissertation in order to identify ways in which the research could have been undertaken more effectively.
