A local client has recently purchased a vacant lot in Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast. Due to the proximity of the site to local retail shopping outlets, great beaches, tourist destinations and public transport, the client and has expressed interest in developing the site for the construction of a hotel. Zoning requirements of the lot limit the building height to 120 m
The client has completed the initial feasibility phase of the project and has commissioned an architect to provide conceptual plans for the hotel development at the site. The proposed building consists of 30 stories above ground with no basement. So far only levels 17-23 have been prepared for the architectural layouts but you may assume that there are no transfers and the structural elements will remain the same up the building (i.e. all walls column run from ground to lv 30).Â
These preliminary Architectural and Structural drawings are provided in a separate document to this brief and include the drawings noted in Table 1.

Project Brief
As final year engineering students, you have been requested to provide structural consulting services to assist with understanding the commercial viability of constructing this 30-story residential development in Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast. You are requested to prepare: Â
1) a conceptual design and basic annotated drawings of selected structural elements with sufficient information for pricing; and
2) Supporting design calculations
Details must include all required structural concrete member sizes, required reinforcement and relevant design information that may affect the final cconstruction cost for the building. Each structural element must represent an efficient design
The building conceptual design is to include the following project deliverables:
1) Basis of Design Report (Written Communication)
Prepare a Basis of Design documentation that outlines the design documentation available and used, and the design requirements and performance goals for the building and its structural systems. It will outline any assumptions that will be made in the development of preliminary design documentation.Â
2) Structural Deliverable 1 â Slab Design
Prepare a conceptual design and annotated drawings for a single two-way reinforced floor slab design. The design is to be completed using hand calculations (see Note 1). Finite element programs such as Microstran or Spacegass are permitted to assist with verifying design actions only (i.e. shear and moment). However commercial design software such as RAPT or RAM Concept are not to be used.Â
3) Structural Deliverable 2 â Framing Design
Prepare a conceptual design and basic annotated drawings for the vertical and lateral load bearing elements of the building (columns and walls). The design is to be completed using hand calculations (see Note 1). Design softwares such as RAPT, RC Column, Strand7 or Etabs are not to be used. Â
