Tips to Write Stunning Persuasive Essays – 150 Essay Topics

blog author name

A persuasive essay, as you may know, is a type of writing that aims to persuade the readers into believing that the argument or claim made in the essay is correct. Even though there are quite a few similarities between an argumentative essay and a persuasive essay, the latter one tends to be a bit kinder and gentler. While in an argumentative essay, you need to discuss and contradict the alternate views, a persuasive essay takes a more lenient approach to convince the reader that the writer has made a believable argument.

In terms of the primary objective, both persuasive and the argumentative essay tries to utilize logic and reason to prove that the mentioned idea or argument is better than any other existing idea or argument. Even though there are several other ways to establish one’s point, persuasive essays must always make proper reason by stating facts, providing solid evidence and logical reasoning, using relevant examples and mentioning a few significant quotes from the experts.

Persuasive essays use emotional appeal and logic to persuade readers to agree to a specific point of view. But that is just the bare minimum idea about persuasive essays.

How do you write a compelling one? Let us delve into that step by step with relevant examples.

 The Introduction

Persuasive essays ideally begin with a bold statement or a question, also known as the Hook.

The Hook or the attention-grabbing statement is consciously added so that the readers know the central point of the argument from the start. You can use multiple forms of Hook – a question, statistic, quote, or anecdote.

You can follow these six tips to create a perfect hook –

  • Add an Eye-Catching Title

Your title should be your first Hook. The opening sentence is definitely important, but you should not pass on an opportunity to engage the readers. Adding an interesting title can engage the audience even before they open the book.

  • Push the Readers into the Middle of the Action

The best strategy to execute a hook sentence is to start with a climatic event. This method hooks the readers in two ways – firstly, the energy of the narrative should interest them. Secondly, you can drop the readers directly in the middle of the action. That will leave them with unanswered questions, forcing them to read further.

  • Form an Emotional Connection

Your writing may not have enough action to interest the readers in certain cases. In those cases, you can try inserting an emotional angle. Highlighting the intense emotional response of a character at the start can tap into the reader’s empathetic side. Once you manage to help the readers create an emotional connection with the characters, they will be interested to find out the entire arc.

  • Make a Surprising Statement

Start the piece with something unexpected. It can be a controversial statement as well. Using a surprise element throws the readers off guard, and they become interested in how you are backing your claim. A classic example of this kind of Hook is the opening line of “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen. The opening sentence, “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” enticed the readers instantly. The entire story was developed based on this statement without introducing any other characters.

  • Leave the Readers Searching for Answers

If you look at most hook sentences, they all have one thing in common – they leave the readers with many questions. Through emotion, action, strong statements, and other techniques, you should keep the readers guessing the character’s next move.

  • Stay Away From Description

Be wary of using long paragraphs while creating a hook. The main aim of the Hook is to leave the readers asking for answers. So, if you keep describing every little detail in the Hook, it dilutes the entire idea. Leave the readers in suspense and only answer those doubts at the end.

Alongside these tips, do not make the mistake of piling too many unanswered questions. That can frustrate the readers. Moreover, answering all the questions at once can lead to confusion. So, ensure to answer a few of the queries so that the readers find the motivation and the interest to keep reading.

The Body Paragraphs

A body paragraph of any essays has three types of sentences – a topic sentence, a body sentence, and a closing sentence. Let’s assume the topic you want to write about is “Traffic pollution in China is one of the worst in the world.

From this statement, you can highlight the primary idea as “many reasons”. So, the ideal topic sentence should be, “There are many reasons why pollution in China is the worst in the world.”

Supporting Evidence

You can include statistics, facts, examples, and expert opinions in the topic sentence to support the thesis statement.

For example, “In 2021, carbon emissions from the fossil fuel used in cars reached about 11.5 billion metric tons. To put things into perspective, the total emission of China in the last year is double that of the US. This shocking figure clearly states how critical the air pollution situation is in China.”

Explanation and Analysis of the Evidence

China has been infamous worldwide because of its extreme level of air pollution [Claim]. The study also showed how the high carbon emission rate from cars and industries leads to a significantly more pollution level than most of the world [Evidence]. We compared the rate of carbon emission from cars in Beijing, China, to other major cities in the world. We found that the root cause of the problem is overpopulation. The extremely high population in Beijing is the reason for an increased number of car purchases. With more cars on the street, there are higher chances of traffic congestion. Due to increased traffic, the carbon emission gets unnaturally high in China.” [Analysis]

Counterargument and Rebuttal

“I understand that the high population count is a major factor for increased traffic pollution in China. However, this logic is not entirely true. Detailed analysis shows that almost 60% of the cars sold in the last few years in China are electric cars. So, the chance of carbon emission from electric cars is negligible.

The Conclusion

Restate your thesis statement and summarise your main arguments

Follow these steps to summarise all the important parts effectively –

  • Cite the texts wherever required.
  • Highlight all the main arguments.
  • Use direct quotations, phrases, and sentences
  • Include in-text references
  • Do not summarise important data or specific examples
  • Report the major arguments objectively.

Call to action or a final thought-provoking statement

End your persuasive paper with something that will force the readers to think about it seriously. Take a unique angle on the topic, and present it in a new form. Another great way to add thought-provoking statements is using personal stories instead of generic examples. That way, the readers can feel connected with the story and will be swayed as you want them to be.

Leave the Reader with a Lasting Impression or Something to Consider

Leave your readers with something to ponder on.

For example, you can end the paper with sentences like,

“Through this paper, we have shown how deforestation and large corporations can lead to global warming. However, we should not stop accusing others. The first step to reducing carbon footprint should start with one self. We should be aware of our daily actions to do our bit to save the Earth, and gradually others will follow in our footsteps.”

Background Information on the Topic

Before writing any statement, gather enough information on the same. The better research you do, the better your essay should be. Check for background information from multiple sources. Encyclopaedias and dictionaries are good places to start researching. You can also search in textbooks, online articles, journals, blogs, and websites. Knowing the right keywords and terminologies can help you narrow down your search.

Thesis Statement Stating Your Stance and Main Arguments

When it comes to the thesis sentence, there is no single way of writing one since it changes according to the essay type. However, the underlying function of a thesis statement remains the same – to convey the main idea of the paper. You can follow this simple formula to create a perfect thesis statement every time –

  • Start with a question
  • Write the initial answer
  • Develop the answer
  • Refine the thesis statement

While writing a persuasive essay, you should ensure that all the essay contents relate to this central idea all the time.

What Makes a Good Persuasive Essay Topic?
