Essay to be completed while in Mental Health placement
Learning outcomes:
1.Practice management of nursing care in collaboration with clients, their families and other health professionals.
2.Apply knowledge of learning and teaching to identify appropriate strategies with clients that will facilitate learning and change in health behaviour to achieve health potential.
3.Apply the principles of cultural safety to nursing practice.

1.Choose a client you have cared for during this placement with dementia. Discuss the appropriateness of this choice with the clinical tutor and the registered nurse. Attach the signed consent form from your clinical tutor.
2.Complete a comprehensive nursing assessment of your client, and include a mental status examination. Identify and include in your assessment two behaviours which are considered challenging.
3.Using current evidence and research*, discuss how you will plan person- centred care for the selected client to manage the identified challenging behaviours. Your person-centred care must incorporate the application of cultural safety principles.
4.Discuss how you met Nursing Council of New Zealand (2016) Competencies 3.1 and 3.2 of Domain 3, Competencies for registered nurses, when working with your client and in your practice placement.
