Develop a resource to help address a social-justice issue faced by a group of tangata whai i te ora/clients, or a particular service or community. Choose a topic related to one of the following aspects of social justice:

 

Social justice topics:

• Trauma

• Criminal Justice

• Poverty

• Stigma

• Marginalisation

• Powerlessness

• Colonialism Format: According to what suits your learning style, choose ONE of the following ways to present your assessment:

Option A:  A written essay between 3000-5000 words, or

Option B:  A PowerPoint presentation with written script/notes per slide (3000-5000 words), or

Option C: A PowerPoint with audio recorded verbal presentation (20 mins) Please note that whichever version you choose to present your assignment, demonstration and communication of knowledge is required (knowledge refers to research, theory and policy).

 

This means that references need to be included in the written essay or presentation (on the slides, in the script/notes or recorded verbal presentation). Assessment instructions:

 

Identify and develop an intervention resource based on a topic that addresses social justice and considers social justice principles. Some resource examples include:

• Educational poster and/or pamphlet

• Training session / Training Manual

• Workshop/s or Hui

• Community event or creative activities

• Advocacy campaign

• Group programme

• Blog / Website / App

• Policy creation or revision

• Letter to an MP

• Funding proposal

1. Need & Audience:

a. Provide a brief definition of social justice using literature.

b. Identify the social justice topic you will be addressing using literature.

c. Identify which social justice principle/s your topic will be addressing.

d. Identify the target group for the resource.

e. Identify what the resource is that you will develop: - Provide the rationale using the literature explaining how the resource will help address the social justice topic.

 

Consider why this particular intervention is a priority, or suitable at this time. Integrate relevant research, theory, policy, and/or evidence-based practice principles underpinning the resource intervention.

 

2. Audience & Health literacy:

a. Consult 1 or 2 key stakeholders to gain insights about the nature of the issue and potential solutions. Stakeholders might include tangata whai i te ora, whanau, colleagues, supervisors, community and/or service leaders, cultural advisors, consumer/peer workers, policy makers.

 

b. Include a summary of the stakeholder feedback in the body of your essay or presentation.

 

c. Identify the health literacy needs of the audience using literature.

 

3. Resource scope – Plan out the intervention:

a. Providing literature to support each step or aspect of your resource ensures that your resource is evidence-based: -

Identify each key element, aspect and/or step of the resource, and provide an explanation incorporating the literature to support the importance/rationale for each element/aspect/step (i.e. research/theory/policy should support each element or aspect of the resource’s design).

 

4. Draft: a. Create a draft of the resource. Attach this as an appendix to your essay or add to your presentation on a slide
