Energy Audit of MIT Tech Park Campus: Optimisation Strategies

Requirements

Requirements
This project requires the student to conduct an energy audit of MIT Tech park campus. The purpose of which is to propose energy optimisation strategies based on current issues, and future potential issues. Optimised strategies must be presented in a detailed report, and will be presented in front of staff and potentially industry professionals. Optimised strategies must consider all pro and cons, with particular attention but not limited to, economic feasibility.

On completion of the project, it is hoped the students will have met the required learning out comes:

1.Analyse and evaluate energy use over the lifecycle of a product or project.
2.Collect data from thermodynamic systems and evaluate the performance of the system.

2Guidelines (Report)
The following subsections will outline the nature of the report:

Content
Title Page:
Project title
Supervisor’s name (and the proposer’s name)
Student name and ID number

Executive Summary:
Briefly outlines the entire content of the report without providing too many details.
From 250 words to a page

Table of Contents:
Outlines all the major and minor headings within the report
Cross referenced with appropriate the page number

List of Figures:
Outlines all the figure captions, and is referenced with appropriate page numbers

List of Tables:
Outlines all the table captions, and is referenced with appropriate page numbers

Nomenclature and Symbols:
Any symbols, acronyms or abbreviations used will be defined here

Introduction:
Provides a brief overview of the topic under consideration.
Also, outlines the key objectives considered in the report

Historical Data (Literature Review):

Data collection of energy utilisation from the past
An in-depth but in-exhaustive research of energy usage for an equivalent building size

Methodology:
Here methods of conducting monitoring phase can be presented
How data will be processed and analysed
Design methods, theoretical calculations and potential simulations

Results and Discussion:
Present your data from the monitoring phase in an engineering way
Present a range of energy conservation methods (ECMs)

Conclusion:
A brief and concise overview of the project

Future Work:
Outline areas of potential savings were the budget of the audit increased.

References:
IEEE Standard
Make sure referencing is used throughout the entire report where appropriate, in order to avoid plagiarism.

Appendix:
Contains additional information, that maybe relevant to the report but is too vast in nature.

Report Format

Guidelines (Presentation)
The following subsections will outline the nature of the report:

Content
Students may follow this structure (to help with slide format), but are not limited to this:

Slide 1: Title
Slide 2: Introduction
Slide 3: Literature Review
Slide 4: Objectives
Slide 5: Methodology
Slide 6: Results and Discussion
Slide 7: Conclusion
Slide 8: Future Work

Format
The presentation must be 10 minutes long, followed by a short question and answer session. The recommended visual aid is a PowerPoint presentation using video projection, in addition the white board may be used to further detail specifics. Students should put into practice the experience gained in their communication skills courses, and should pay attention to the previous feedback received from their supervisor and colleagues.
