1.Examine the socio-historical context of Aotearoa New Zealand, with emphasis on indigenous knowledge and a strength-based approach 
2.Examine the impacts of colonization of Aotearoa New Zealand and M?ori responses to rapid societal change 
3.Critically analyse a range of contemporary mental health and addictions priorities, including relevant theory, therapy, competencies, and ethical considerations  
4.Apply a range of mental health and addiction therapeutic skills in a practitioner role[ Note: This evidence requirement is largely delivered via a clinically supervised practical component. This aspect of applied learning will also be supported by case studies and role play experience during noho w?nanga. 

This course introduces tauira to the mental health and addictions field, within a strength-based indigenous context.  An Aotearoa-specific dual competency focus introduces both mainstream and kaupapa M?ori theory and cultural practice models in the field. Tauira will develop an understanding of key concepts of counselling in the mental illness and addictions field, including therapy models, principles, ethics, and competencies. The importance of a wh?nau-centred approach and the therapeutic relationship is emphasised. Self-reflection is emphasised throughout the programme, supported during this course by a reflective journal and critical reflective essay. 

 

Critical essay standards follow protocols in the Course Guide. Structure is easy to follow, i.e. introduction and conclusion, good linkages between paragraphs. Adheres to APA referencing standards. Free of grammatical errors.
