The assessment item will be graded out of 100 and contributes 15% to the final grade.
Background And Overall Goal
The assessment item requires you to take on the role of a business development consultant and produce key insights/actionable information to guide the internationalisation of a New Zealand SME. It assesses your understanding of the exporting ecosystem, international opportunities, drivers of internationalisation, and how New Zealand businesses go international.
The assessment allows you to demonstrate progress towards the following course learning objectives (CLOs), especially CLO 4:
1.Describe the international entrepreneurial ecosystem supporting exports and the role of SMEs within that.
2.Explain the entrepreneurial mindset in the international business context.
3.Evaluate international opportunities for Small-Medium Enterprises (SMEs)
4.Apply theoretical frameworks, models and concepts of international entrepreneurship to develop a business case for an SME to enter foreign markets.
Using the presentation by Ali Quinn from Zerode Bikes as a starting point, you will provide insights to guide the international expansion. Please note the following;
Zerode has undergone a serendipitous first phase of international expansion.
They seek a formal export plan for additional expansion.
Zerode are open to exploring any clearly specified and worthwhile opportunities.
They have studied Noho’s business model and are wondering the extent to which this can be replicated.
In self-selected groups of three or four, you are required to (1) identify an international opportunity (i.e. suitable country and customer segment), and (2) discuss how the opportunity should come to fruition (i.e. value proposition, market entry/servicing, adaptation). In completing the task, you must consider the following four key steps;
a) Conduct a brief situational analysis to outline where Zerode Bikes fit in the marketspace
b) Search for and utilize macro level data, insights, and trends.
c) Discuss findings against the backdrop of key scholarly literature and models
Provide actionable recommendations for the client organisation.
The assessment item comprises one part:
