Critically discuss relevant contemporary reward theory and research, and identify how such theory and research can inform strategic and total reward practices to ensure continued organisational effectiveness, performance and competitive advantage within your chosen organisation.”
1. ‘Critically discuss’ means consider different theoretical approaches and draw conclusions about their use and effectiveness. You’ll need to review academic literature, not just the core text book. Don’t rely on things like CIPD factsheets, website articles or reports in HR or business magazines – although these can be useful supporting evidence, they aren’t on their own reliable sources to build an argument on.
2. I've highlighted the word 'contemporary' - while a theory from the 1960s may still have relevance, you should be thinking about research and arguments developed over the last 25 years or so.
3. Consider your conclusions in the light of the organisation you are discussing. How does the theory that you think is most relevant affect the reward practices? And if reward practices aren’t currently helping to support effectiveness, performance or competitive advantage, what approach would you suggest?
