Task :
Counselling Skills Assignment Task
You are required to conduct a mock counselling session with an assigned classmate as your “client”. You will conduct this session as a Counselling Skills student, and not a professional counsellor or anyone else. Ensure that ethical guidelines such as informed consent (permission for recording the session) are followed.
You can either:
1. conduct, video-record, and transcribe an in-person counselling session or
2. conduct an online, real-time counselling session on Google Docs or similar The resulting transcript (4 to 5 pages recommended) of your counselling session is a crucial component of your assignment. Submissions missing this transcript will not receive more than a Pass grade. Video recordings should be made available for review by the lecturer until you receive your confirmed result for the module.
In your 2000-word essay, excluding the transcript, you are required to:
1. Explain the concept and practice of counselling.
2. Explain, with examples, appropriate and inappropriate counselling responses.
3. Explain the counselling skill of advanced empathy.
4. Analyse 5 (FIVE) counselling skills used appropriately during the counselling.
Session with your assigned classmate as your client. These 5 skills should be evident in your transcript and should be from the following list:
1. Attending (3 subtypes)
2. Active listening
3. Responding with empathy
4. Paraphrasing
5. Summarising
6. Questioning
7. Self-disclosure
8. Immediacy
9. Advanced empathy
10.Challenging
1. Analyse 3 (three) challenges or areas for improvement encountered during the counselling session.
2. Suggest appropriate ways to address the above-mentioned 3 challenges or areas for improvement.
Points to note:
1. Essay to be uploaded and submitted for grading before 2355 hours on the day of the last lesson (session 14 for Full-Time and Session 7 for Part-Time
students) with no extensions allowed except in the case of emergencies with relevant documentation (e.g. hospitalisation due to accident or sudden illness.
2. Submission should be 1 MS Word or PDF document containing the following parts in this specific order:
a. APA cover page
b. 2000 words essay
c. References list
d. Transcript
3. APA cover page must include running head, page number, title of essay, your name, and name of institute. In addition, please mention word count.
4. Use 1.5 line spacing with 12-point Arial font
5. Word Limit: 2000 words (excludes APA cover page, reference list, and transcript)
6. References: 8 separate valid academic sources (published textbooks or peerreviewed journal articles)
