One-Page Guide
“Home support is a key influencer of academic performance (Chohan & Khan, 2010). However, not all children have the privilege of having supportive parents and a nurturing home environment. This is especially true for low [socioeconomic status] households, who may often face greater adversity and challenges (e.g., financial woes). Consequently, this jeopardizes their ability to focus on their children’s education and give them the care and attention that they need in their development. Where home support is lacking, it is difficult to reach out to parents and effect change through them. Hence, the role of schools, where children spent the most time other than at home, becomes ever more important…Studies have found that students from lowincome groups who have a strong and supportive relationship with an adult, most often a teacher, tend to have better academic achievement and socio-emotional adjustment than their peers who did not have such a figure (Murray & Malmgren, 2005).”
Appraise the scenario above and apply your knowledge of performance psychology by identifying relevant theories and concepts specific to resilience and self-efficacy. Apply this information on resilience and self-efficacy, and design a one-page guide that can help primary school teachers’ better support students from low socioeconomic status households. This one-page guide is intended to be used in print media forms and applied to common office spaces and lounges in the school
