Amazon's Dominance in the Marketplace and Social Responsibility

Business Ethics, Social Responsibility and Global Business Discussion Post  No unread replies. No replies. This week we are going to take a look at a series of companies through the lens of Business Ethics, Social Responsibility and Global Business.

The U.S. based companies we are going to consider are: Amazon, Google and Facebook We will also look at the Chinese firms TikTok and WeChat. The following articles from the WSJ along with in the textbook will form the basis for discussion this week.

Review the two assigned and read the following articles, then answer these 3 questions in your initial discussion post. Cite and include additional recent articles or video clips in your post.

Each of these stories has been given quite a bit of attention in the recent business press so you can add to the class disussion with your 2 response posts to classmates due September. You must post before you can see your classmates' replies.

1) Using the material in the text and the articles on Amazon below plus additional research to form your argument, do you think Amazon has an "unfair" advantage? Why or why not? What other industries and firms are affected by Amazon's dominance in the marketplace?

What is Amazon's social responsibility? What constitutes ethical behavior for Amazon and its competitors? Has your view of Amazon changed since COVID-19 impacted all of our lives? Why or why not?

2) How is the worldwide market impacting Google and Facebook and influencing their respective strategies going forward?

3) One of the world's largest markets in terms of population is China. The final two companies we are considering this week are based in China: TikTok and WeChat.

How are TikTok's and Wechat's strategies unique to their home country of China? How are their strategies universal (i.e. generalizable to any market including Europe and the U.S.)?
