Developing a Personal Leadership Development Plan

1. Vision and Values

For your final assignment in this course, you will develop a plan for how you intend to apply what you learned
in a way that will impact your current and future work team(s).   

 

You must address in your plan:
1. Vision and Values – Write a personal Vision Statement reflecting your leadership style and core values. Briefly describe your primary leadership style. Then review your top 3 values on your PowerSkills PRO report, as well as other personal values you may have (e.g., Autonomy, balance, competency, helping others, influence, integrity, etc.).

• “To serve as a leader, live a balanced life, and apply ethical principles to make a significant difference.”

2. Gap Analysis – A Gap Analysislooks at Current State vs. Future or Desired State.  Once you establish where
you are and where you would like to be, you can identify the gaps and work to address them.  Conduct a Gap Analysis on your Leadership Skills.  To establish your Current State, you can use the results from:
Your PowerSkills PROTM reports
Your personal SWOT analysis
The assessments you completed throughout this course
Now think about where you would like to be and identify where there is room for improvement – this is your Future/Desired State.

 

3. Goals – Based on your Gap Analysis, identify 3?4 personal leadership development goals that explain how you plan to apply what you learned in this program at your workplace. These goals should reflect what you learned about yourself and the skill(s) you plan to develop (e.g., functions of management, functions of leaders, personal SWOT analysis, the power skills, etc.).
Examples:  
• Improve my relationships with the other store managers through greater collaboration.
• Learn more about what motivates each of my team members to improve morale. (plan adapted from “How to Create a Personal Leadership Development Plan”)

 

4. SMART Goals – Based on the goals you identified; briefly explain how you plan to achieve each goal using the SMART goal approach (see categories below):
a. Specific – Your goal should have a clear, specific endpoint.
b. Measurable – You need to be able to accurately track your progress so you can judge when a goal will be met.
c. Attainable – Just about any goal can be attained when you plan steps wisely and establish a realistic time frame. On the other hand, if you set a goal that’s too ambitious, you will struggle to achieve it and that will sap your motivation.
d. Relevant – Goals should be things you are willing and able to work toward— things you believe can be accomplished and you want to accomplish.
e. Timely – Setting a timeframe for your goal(s) helps quantify it further and helps keep your focus on track.

 

5. Implementation Plan ? Finally, briefly explain the resources and support you plan to include that will help you achieve your goals. Consider the following:
a. With whom should I share my leadership development plan?
b. Who can I ask that will support me?
c. Who can I ask that will hold me accountable?
d. Who do I know that possesses the skills or competencies I want to develop further?
e. How will I celebrate when I achieve my goals?
