Here is a brief film of people describing what they think a "leader" is. Respond to these items in your discussion post this week:
1. Identify what your own definition of a leader is. How does it compare with how the book defines transformational leadership? Support it with resources.
2. I would like you to ask 3 people (co-workers, family members or a friend) what their definition of a "leader" is. Discuss the results of this informal ‘survey’ and then contrast it with your own definition and what you have learned this week through your class activities.
3. How do the skills and characteristics of leaders in today’s healthcare environment compare with those needed in the past?

4. Previous leadership was driven by a hierarchal theory, where the leader promotes competition and control. The focus is on skills, facts, wealth and gaining advantage.
5. Today’s leadership is focused on collaboration while maintaining productivity and success. It is driven towards empowering strengths rather than weaknesses, team building, serving others as a top priority, interaction, promoting education and innovation, regulating emotion and how emotions affect others, integrity, active listening, being flexible and responsive to change, and building relationships. It is finding balance between traditional and contemporary leadership. (Marquis & Huston, 2021)
6. An important thought to consider is mentioned by Spano- Szekely and Quinn Griffin. During the hiring process, nurse managers should be asked questioned to determine their leadership skills. It should also be required that leadership education is an ongoing thing. When dealing with nursing shortages or increase workloads, it may be easy to lose sight of contemporary leadership, therefore continued education can keep the manager/leader on track. (Spano-Szekely & Quinn Griffin, 2016)
