Rumors regarding a surplus of nurses have periodically circulated. A study of the employment market shows that in the last 20 years there were three periods of time when we experienced a shortage of nurses? The surplus that some speak of occurred because of hiring freezes and cutbacks. (1) Employment of registered nurses is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2010, and because the occupation is large, many new jobs will result. There will always be a need for traditional hospital nurses, but a large number of new nurses will be employed in home health, long-term, and ambulatory care. (1)The underlying demand for allied health practitioners is greater now than ever before. Increasing numbers of people are living longer, and as the population grows older, the need and demand for quality health care grows. (¶) The health services industry is made up of six segments: hospitals; nursing and personal care facilities; offices and clinics of doctors, dentists, and other health practitioners; home health care services; health and allied services such as drug treatment centers, blood banks, and kidney dialysis centers; and medical and dental laboratories.
Health care workers must possess skills in the following areas: command of the English language, including written and oral communication skills; computer skills; conflict resolution; supervision and delegation of task; and knowledge of cultural diversity. Medical professionals must be willing to continually improve their knowledge and skills. (¶) Health care professionals must be caring and sympathetic. They must be able to accept responsibility, direct or supervise others, follow orders precisely, and determine when consultation is required.
