Drawing specific examples from the assigned reading, write a three to four (3-4) page paper analyzing The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and other slave narratives as sources.

 

Explain the difference between a primary and secondary source and determine which type of source slave narratives would be considered. What can these sources tell us about the lives of enslaved people? Are these reliable sources? Why or why not?

 

Conclude with an explanation of why the types of sources historians use are important and why it is important to understand the context primary and secondary sources were written in. Think about what we have learned about historical context and analyzing primary sources.

 

Prepare To prepare for this assignment, carefully read: Ch. 11 of your textbook specifically focusing on the following slave narratives (at the end of the chapter): Nat Turner explains the Southampton rebellion, 1831 Harriet Jacobs on rape and slavery, 1860 Solomon Northup describes a slave market, 1841 The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass important: You may not use any other outside sources.

 

You can use the American Yawp textbook and you must use Frederick Douglass and the other narratives from the textbook. Paper Format double spaced 12 pt font 1 inch margins Citations - I am not really concerned about which format (ALA, Chicago/Turabian/ MLA) you decide to use but you must cite every book, article, website, or documentary you use in your paper correctly or you WILL lose points.
