ENGL1302 English Composition
Task
Literary Argument
The objective of this assignment is to construct a literary argument that shows in depth literary analysis as well as effective argumentation about a specific issue or question or problem from a piece of literature. You are basically combining techniques from the previous essays assigned in this course to prove your understanding of arguing about literature.
It’s important that you have read through the assigned textbook chapters in detail to understand the scope of this assignment. This essay functions as the “final exam” for this course. You are trying to prove that you have met the outcomes for this course.
To do that, you need to demonstrate that you know how to research, you can develop ideas and synthesize primary and secondary, you can analyze, interpret, and evaluate different types of writing, you can write in a style that clearly communicates meaning, builds credibility, and inspires belief or action, and you can properly format your essay.
Topic selection
You will form an argument on Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story “The Yellow Wallpaper,” on pages 233-246 of the textbook using one of the research methods for literature detailed in Chapter 7.
As the textbook points out, a thorough analysis from any one critical approach would take dozens of pages, so for this reason, you need to focus your topic to a specific element or issue taken from the story. If you need help, please use the questions under “Thinking About the Text” to focus your topic. As always, if you need help choosing a specific topic, please let me know sooner rather than later.
Research Focus
You can use research outside of the textbook for this assignment. The library offers databases specific to literature, but I usually start my research on Academic Search Complete.
