Assignment 1: Comparative Research

In the Unit I Lesson, we discussed the three theoretical perspectives of comparative research. Comparative research is crucial in bringing about positive change in the field of criminal justice.

Identify two of those perspectives involving comparative research, and describe both with examples. Ensure you address the issues below.

• Examine the concept of comparative criminal justice.
  
  
• Assess how comparisons are made with comparative research.

Your essay must be at least three pages in length, not counting the title page and references page. You must include an introduction. Also, make certain to include a minimum of four sources, one of which must be your textbook. All sources used must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations. Follow APA Style when creating citations and references for this assignment.

In Unit VII, you will complete a research paper on a foreign criminal justice system of your choice, and you will familiarize yourself with its law enforcement, court system, and corrections practices.

This assignment will include two parts, but both parts will be submitted together in a single document. In preparation for the research paper, complete both parts as stated below.

For this part of the assignment, you will identify one foreign criminal justice system as the topic for your research paper. Explain why you chose this topic, and make certain to include the information below.

• Explain the concept of comparative criminal justice.
  
  
• Identify how a foreign criminal justice system follows the concept of comparative criminal justice.
  
  
• How does this foreign criminal justice system compare to that of the United States?

This part must be at least two pages in length.

For this part of the assignment, provide four scholarly resources that support your topic (two of which must come from the CSU Online Library) and will be used as the basis for developing your research paper. Under each reference, summarize the source and how it is applicable to your research topic on a foreign criminal justice system. Part II should be at least one page in length.

In Unit III, you have learned about different criminal justice theories, one of which is transnational crime. For this assignment, examine how transnational crime affects the global community’s economic, social, or legal qualities and important issues that arise in today’s news for this crime.

Select one type of transnational crime from the list below:

• illegal immigration,
  
  
• human trafficking,
  
  
• drug smuggling, or
  
  
• another similar crime.

Select a country other than the United States for this transnational crime, and show how that country is affected economically, socially, and politically by this crime.

Assignment 2: Foreign Criminal Justice System Research Paper

Your case study must be at least three pages in length. You must provide a minimum of two sources, one of which can be your textbook.

Follow APA Style when constructing this assignment, and include in-text citations and references for all sources that are used. Please note that no abstract is needed.

The United States has 51 criminal justice systems that include policing, courts, and correctional responsibilities. In this assignment, select your state criminal justice system, and examine and contrast key issues.

In your essay, use Florida to report on the areas listed below:

• jurisdictional boundaries (state versus federal),
  
  
• classification of crimes, and
  
  
• Penalties.

For this assignment, you will create an original, informational, 3- to 5-minute video presentation on a foreign country’s criminal justice system of your choice as though you are standing in front of U.S. diplomatic personnel who are arriving in the country to learn about this foreign country’s criminal justice system.

For your video presentation, ensure you address the topics below.

• Are there any specific laws or customs from the selected country that may influence what you can do or cannot do as a private citizen?
• What type of police force protects the country (national, state, or local police or military)?
  
  
• What is the court system like for the citizens of that country? Do they have the same rights as an individual in the United States?
  
  
• What is the prison system like if you were convicted of a crime?

Review the Media Guidelines document prior to beginning the assignment because it will aid you in developing your video.

Your video should provide a clear visual of you speaking. Make sure you dress properly and speak naturally in a pleasant, social way. You may use any recording equipment to record your video, including a cell phone. Record your video in front of a stage at a local community center (if possible) or a relevant backdrop. Please ensure that there are no distracting or overbearing sounds that hinder the viewer’s ability to clearly hear your presentation.

Your video and written transcript should address the requirements set forth above. Be concise and to the point.

All too often, we forget what rights and liberties that have been granted to us as citizens and not to the government. This assignment will help you in reviewing some of the basic principles upon which the United States was founded.

In this assignment, you will examine the Bill of Rights, and then you will select one of the first 10 amendments. Provide your interpretation of the selection, and then compare it to another country’s citizen rights to ascertain if it would be permissible there.

In your essay, address the subjects below.

• Examine overall civil rights and liberties for an individual in the United States.
  
  
• Compare the selected Bill of Rights amendment to the rights of citizens from another country.

The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with the opportunity to identify one foreign criminal justice system, which you selected in Unit II, as the basis for your research paper. The research paper must reflect the concepts covered in this course.

Your research paper should include the elements below.

• How is your foreign criminal justice system structured with its law enforcement, court system, and corrections practices?
• How is terrorism and transnational crime addressed within the country’s criminal justice system?
  
  
• How does this foreign criminal justice system follow the concept of comparative criminal justice?
  
  
• How does this foreign criminal justice system compare to that of the United States?
  
  
• Provide statistics for your foreign criminal justice system (charts or tables on crime or corrections).

Additionally, your research paper must meet the requirements below.

• Your research paper must be at least four pages in length, not counting the title page and references page.
  
  
• Include the four sources that were used in researching your topic in Unit II, and utilize the CSU Online Library to find a
  minimum of one additional scholarly resource; also, reference the textbook (i.e., you should have at least six sources).
  
  
• Include an introductory paragraph with a succinct thesis statement.
  
  
• Conclude with a restatement of the thesis and a conclusion paragraph.

The purpose of this paper is for you to reflect on the course content involving transnational crime and its future effects on the United States or that of another country’s economy, crime level, and so forth.

You will select from one of the following transnational crimes:

• smuggling of migrants, or
  
  
• sex crimes.

As a part of your reflection, identify any laws or actions that have been taken by the United States or a country/international entity to stop your chosen crime. In addition, you will address the information below.

• What type of control is used in managing the crime (individual or organization)?
  
  
• How much money is estimated to be spent in trying to obtain the product being produced or provided by the crime?
  
  

Consider what you have learned in this course; has it changed your personal perspective(s) about the seriousness of transnational crimes? Explain how learning about transnational crimes will be of value in your future learning endeavors in the criminal justice field.
