Writing Assignment – Spring 2020 (Section 1)

Citation Style

Write a 5 page research review paper (double spaced, 12 pt. font, 1” margins) on a topic of your choice related to healthcare or a body system. This could take the form of a paper on a disease, an interesting molecule, a cell or tissue, a medication, etc. as long as it relates in some way to the themes of anatomy and physiology we have studied or will study this semester.

I recommend discussing your topic with me before proceeding with your research and writing. Your writing should be clear, concise, and easy to understand. Write in a style like that of your Saladin textbook.

This is a review paper and should incorporate at least 6 peer-reviewed, scholarly sources. These resources will primarily be found in scientific journals. To find these sources, use the links provided on Canvas. Additionally, the librarians can help you locate resources. Inappropriate sources include magazines, most websites, and textbooks.

You should organize your paper with headings and subheadings for the sections that you discuss. I have posted an example on Canvas. You do not need to include an abstract in your paper. Start with an introduction that “sets the stage” for the topic you will discuss – provide a bit of background and outline the structure of the paper. Put some thought into developing the sections of your paper – don’t just use one reference per section. Rather, combine your sources together in an interesting way that tells a story.

You must include in text citations and a works cited page to properly provide credit for the works you reference. Format your citations using CSE (Council of Science Educators) Name Year Method. I have posted useful resources on Canvas.

Be sure to provide proper citation for any part of your paper that relies on your references. Refrain from using direct quotes, rather paraphrase the resource. Note also the use of in-text citations in the examples below.

Bad: Jones (2016) said “Exposure to UV light is one of the most important causes of skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma.”

Better: UV light exposure is a major risk factor for basal cell carcinoma (Jones 2016).

Note how the paraphrased example summarizes the information from the resource and gives the original author credit without copying their exact words

Submit a bibliography listing your references using CSE style. Include a short annotation with each reference explaining the paper and its relevance to your topic. Be sure to title the bibliography with your intended topic. You aren’t locked into using only these references for your paper, but I want you to get started reading and compiling resources. See the example posted to Canvas.

Submit a rough draft of your progress on the paper to me at this date to receive comments and direction for the final product. This does not have to be a polished product, but the further along you are in the writing process, the more useful comments I can provide. A grading rubric has been provided on Canvas for this assignment as well.
