The thyroid gland happens to be a vital hormone gland. The thyroid gland plays a major role in metabolism, growth, and development of the human body. The thyroid gland also helps maintain and regulate body functions by releasing a steady amount of thyroid hormones into the blood stream. The only similarity of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism is they both involve the thyroid gland and thyroid hormones. The major difference between hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism is that hyperthyroidism occurs when the body creates too many thyroid hormones such as thyroxine and triiodothyronine which becomes overactive. With hyperthyroidism an individual may experience rapid heart beat, increased appetite, anxiety, sensitivity to heat, and sudden weight loss. Hyperthyroidism can occur when there is an inflammation of the thyroid and by an auto immune disease known as Graves' disease. Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid cannot produce enough thyroid hormones to function well. Hypothyroidism slows the body's metabolism, causes weight gain, and typically only affects about 4.6 percent of the United States. The cardiovascular affects of hypothyroidism is a decreased cardiac output and cardiac contractility, whereas hyperthyroidism is an increase instead. The mental and emotional outcomes would be the same as any other disease a person has been diagnosed with. The individual may feel stressed or sad that this is happening to them. Thyroid disease can affect the individual by causing them to feel in denial, depressed, and worried about the changes and outcomes they will have to make to their life. Thyroid disease can affect the individuals family and community financially and socially. They may feel worried about hospital bills, how to pay for medications, they may feel worried about how their loved one feels, having to cancel social events or reschedule them with their community, and they may also not feel anything at all right away being in a state of denial.
The Thyroid gland plays a major role in the metabolism, growth, and development of the human body. The Thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate the bodies metabolic rate. This metabolic rate helps control the heart, muscle and digestive functions, brain development, and even bone maintenance. Overall, the thyroid controls how your body’s cells use energy rom food, through metabolism. So it makes sense that it would have an affect on our heart, bones, brain and so on. The implications for the individual in both of these cases is serious lifestyle changes. Both of these conditions have an effect on the entire body. All of the conditions that can occur for these patients are treatable. I think its important to note the mental effects of this disease though. The risk for depression, anxiety, fatigue and overall the effects emotionally need to be addressed. All patients with this condition will need to take care of their mental health, whether that is with medication or seeing someone and talking about their feelings after being diagnosed with this condition. Mental health can ruin your entire life if you allow it and this condition doesn’t allow for nutrients to get into our brain putting the patient at greater risk for developing a serious depressive disorder. Some lifestyle changes may be necessary as well like diet and exercise but it is hard to make changes in your life when you are depressed or unhappy.
The thyroid gland produces and manages the hormones adrenaline and dopamine. The thyroid gland also helps regular metabolism. The thyroid gland works with the help of the pituitary gland. It is located on the neck under the vocals. The thyroid is what helps someone have energy. If someone has no energy, it could be because of the thyroid gland. It can affect how you breathe, gaining weight, or how fast your heart beats. It can also affect your body’s temperature, its cholesterol and regulate menstrual cycles. 50% of the population has microscopic nodules. It is often hereditary or someone will have it in their family. Hypothyroidism is often linked with depression and anxiety. Women are 5-8 times more likely than men to be diagnosed with thyroid disease. It can cause a poor quality of life. People may put judgment who don’t understand the disease and think someone is using it as an excuse for being overweight, when it is really an issue with the thyroid. It can make the individual have bad memory and be tired all the time. It could affect the family or loved ones as their loved one may always feel tired or be going to the doctor. I have a cousin who has thyroid issues and some other issues. Her wife definitely is very supportive of her and has to take her to a ton of doctors' appointments. I believe she is in a wheelchair these days. She is always feeling tired and miserable. 20 million people in the U.S. have some sort of thyroid disease so it affects a lot of people.
