1. The late nineteenth century saw many changes in America including the explosive growth of urbanization and the rise of the labor movement. Explore and analysis these two elements which changed the fabric of American society.

o Discuss the rise of the labor movement in late 19th century America. What were the reasons for the formation of labor unions? What were the major gains and setbacks experienced by the movement? Cite examples using leaders and organizations involved in labor issues of the period.

o Describe the explosive growth of urbanization in the late nineteenth century. What factors led to this growth, and what were the results, both positive and negative of this growth? Be sure to include examples from the primary source readings to help illustrate your points.

o Among the responses to urbanization was the rise of the social gospel and settlement houses. Describe each of these, showing what problems each tried to correct and how they went about their tasks. Be sure to use examples from the Primary source readings.

2. What were the reasons for American overseas expansionism (both military and economic) at the turn of the 20th century? What justifications did Americans offer for and against expansionism?

o Discuss the role of the Spanish-American War and its aftereffects as it pertains to this rise of American imperialism.

3.The Progressive Era (1890 1920) was marked by reforms instituted to address the economic and social issues of this period in American history.

o What elements of reform did progressivism bring to America? Be sure to discuss and include examples of the four themes of progressivism.

oHow did the womens rights movement and Americas turn to Prohibition factor into Progressivism?

o Discuss the course of the womens movement from the late 1800s through the 1920s. What were the various arguments for and against womes suffrage? Be sure to use examples from the primary source readings to illustrate your points.

o What were the results of the Eighteenth Amendment?

o How was America different in 1920 from what it had been in 1900 because of progressivism, both positive and negative?

4. Discuss the African American experience from the post-Reconstruction South through the 1920s, including the Great Migration and the Harlem Renaissance.

o What were the struggles faced and who were some of the main activists that influenced awareness and change for black Americans during these decades?

5. The decade of the 1920s saw many social and political issues reach a fever pitch. Consider the impact of the rise of fundamentalism, the struggle for reproductive rights, the backlash toward immigration, the emergence of organized crime and an increased consumer culture in America.
