Essay Writing Guidelines: How to Format and Structure Your Papers

Paper Format: Please follow the below format and composition guidelines for this, and all future papers:

  • Length: written assignments (including “major”) should be a minimum of 250 words, or 500 max (1-2 pages)
  • Format: Arial or new times roman, black, 12-point font. Font must not be bolded. Use approx. 1” margins (or MS Word default)
  • Include Works Cited / References using (MLA) or References (APA) format. See References below for additional information.

Content & Composition Structure: written assignments should be in essay format, which includes an introduction paragraph, 1-3 main body paragraphs and a conclusion paragraph. Note: this is a writing intensive (WI) class and you should be familiar with basic essay writing concepts, specifically:

  • How to write a well worded introduction paragraph
  • Paragraph construction (e.g. intro sentence, conclusion sentence and sentences in between that support hit upon key points. Each paragraph should be focused upon a main point or topic.

  • Sentences should be focused upon basis grammar and spelling… Grammar, spelling and clarity are important.
  • Please check for spelling and grammar!

References: References are often used to support information discussed in essays. References help back up arguments, prove major points and make the essay more reliable. When you use references to validate the major points in your paper, you are showing the reader that your arguments are not based on your personal assertions alone, but instead on those of other authors and researchers. You can use references by summarizing, paraphrasing or quoting your sources, providing an in-text citation and citing the sources on your reference page. Your reference page should appear at the end of the paper.

  • What is the new technology and how did it evolve (historical basis)? What is the background/history/context/ legal precedent? [Example, historical basis for smart phones can be followed through the evolution of land-line phones, to mobile phones, to smart phones]
  • Discuss the benefitsand disadvantages of this technology upon society?
  • Identify segments, groups or populations within society that are negatively impacted by the introduction of the technology, and discuss what gaps or measures should be taken [Example, with the development of self-check-out technology, who was hurt?
