Attend two humanities events pn canines during the semester and write a 3-page paper (double spaced) reporting on and reviewing each event.
What: The things we look at and discuss in class are what you're looking for. Appropriate types of events include: exhibits at the Mclninch Gallery in Frost. concerts. dance performances, theater performances, poetry readings, lectures on cultural topics, or any of the films in the SNHU Film Series. If you am uncertain whether a particular event is appropriate, please cheek with me first. I will try to announce anything that 1 become aware of during the semester. You can find listings of events online if you look at the SNHU Arts Calendar.
Things that Do Not Count: sporting events, off-campus events (unless specifically approved by me), lecture by a business person about working for the Celtics, study break midnight pancakes during finals, etc. There is a difference between an event...and a humanities event.
How: Your paper should do two things:
1) Recap: Provide a detailed description of the event. How many people were there? Where was it held? What kind of people attended? Who was the sponsoring organization? If it was an exhibition. descriae the title and subject of the show, what kind of artworks were shown, the theme (if any); if a concert, report on the kind of music played, which composers and pieces were played, what sort of instruments used, if there was any introduction or explanation given by performers, etc. If you like, you can relate the circumstances of your visit. for example, you can explain that you attended with a group of friends. e.g. It should be clear from your paper that you in fact personally attended the event you are writing about.
2) Review: Then continue by giving a subjective evaluation of the event as you experienced it. Did you like it? If so, what did you like about it (be as specific as possible)? If you did not like it, explain in detail what bothered you about it. How did it relate to your initial expectations? Did it surprise you in any way? Try to find one aspect of it that you found particularly izneresting/repellatu/beautifull/strange and explain why you had that reaction. Did the experience give you a new idea about art or music, e.g.? Did it confirm something you already suspected?
Note: Because I am asking you to record your subjective impressions. I ant prepared to accept anything you have to say about your experience even if I disagree. My only requirement is that you explain any opinion you present in a clear and analytical way. Many really good reviewers out there (hook reviewers, music reviewers, e.g.) are at their best when they have absolutely hated something, but expressed this feeling in a sharp manner. zeroing in on some central weakness or dishonesty. Avoid simply claiming that something was boring. If you felt bored by a certain performance, for example, be prepared to explain what exactly made it so, what you thought was lacking, and what would have made it better in your eyes.
