Writing a short description of a Discourse community

Task:

Discussion Board Post #3 and Replies Discussion Board Post #3 (10 pts.)(Related to Project #3): Please attach a document to your thread that includes two things: (1) A short description of your discourse community, who you plan to interview (do not mention specific names—simply describe their role in the community), and your research question (the focus of your research). (2) Five potential interview questions you plan to ask. For a 30-minute interview, you should plan to ask roughly 5-6 questions, so after receiving feedback, you will decide which questions to modify or add/delete. Discussion Board Post Rubric (0-7 pts.) Novice: Posted 3 or fewer questions and description (see above) was unclear, missing elements, or nonexistent. (7.1-9 pts.) Competent: Posted at least 4 questions that are mostly clear and description was mostly complete. (9.1-10 pts.) Proficient: Posted 5 questions and description was clearly written and complete. Discussion Board Replies (to Post #3) (15 pts): Respond to two of your peers with thoughtful comments. Provide as much detail as possible and be as specific as you can. Please address these peer review questions: Do the questions seem appropriate given the author’s research focus? Which questions should be modified? Why?

Write at least one more open-ended interview question appropriate to author’s topic for him/her/them to consider. Does the author have any leading questions? (see Driscoll’s “Introduction to Primary Research”) If so, point them out and describe how the author could rewrite it. If the author does not have any leading questions, write another open-ended question appropriate to their topic for him/her/them to consider. Discussion Board Replies Rubric (0-10 pts.) Novice: The replies are not satisfactory because they are unclear, lack detail, or non-existent. (10.1-13 pts.) Competent: The replies may be confusing or lack detail (13.1-15 pts.) Proficient: All of the questions from the author are addressed, specific questions are answered thoroughly with examples and feedback. Journals Journal #5 Click the link above to complete this journal. Journal #5 Using the Oral History Association and StoryCorps links provided, choose an oral history to view/listen to from one of the collections provided (either one of those listed by OHA or Story Corp). Next, answer these questions:

(1) Logistics: Which history did you choose and why? Was it an audio or video recording? (2) Critical Thinking: Why was the oral history/interview recorded? What did you learn from the interviewee? What organization or group of people would find this interview to be significant? (3) Reflection: What did you learn from the interview? What additional questions do you have for either the person conducting the interview or the person being interviewed? (4) Keep in mind that Project #3 asks you to conduct research about a community to which you do not currently belong. Create a list of three different discourse communities you could research for this project. (5) For each community you listed for question #4, freewrite for 5 minutes about why you chose this community, how you might approach/research it for this project, and who you might interview. You do not need to commit to a community yet—you are simply brainstorming. It may be helpful to conduct preliminary secondary research on your three communities to determine which kinds of sources will be helpful to you. After reading and/or viewing the webpage “Interviewing” (Purdue OWL) and the webpage “Creating Good Interview and Survey Questions” (Purdue OWL), respond to the following questions/prompts: (6) One major difference between the oral history projects described by OHA and Project #3 concerns public accessibility: we will not be sharing our interviews with the general public. Regardless, ethical concerns still exist. Explain how you can help preserve your interviewee’s “perspective, dignity, privacy, and safety” (OHA Statement on Ethics) while you complete this project. (7) Return to your answers from questions #4 and #5. Decide which discourse community you will research for Project #3 (ideally you will choose one your freewriting), and draft 6 preliminary interview questions (keep in mind they will be workshopped next week via discussion board). (8) Locate at least two of the four secondary sources you will need for your Synthesis Matrix and Project #3 essay. For each source, provide the APA citation, make note of its credibility (how do you know if it is a good source to use? Is it scholarly or non-scholarly?) as well as a brief summary and explanation of its relevancy to your research.
