Why Banks Still Use Windows XP for ATM Kiosks - Analysis

Background

When responding the scenario below, please make sure you reference the material in Chapter 4.

Open a Word document and respond to the scenario in it. When complete, save your document and upload it to Blackboard. Many bank ATM kiosks have a computer tower in them running on Windows XP. These computers run proprietary software needed to handle cash withdrawal requests, deposits, check account balance requests, etc.

The proprietary software also maintains an accurate balance in the cash dispenser tray, which likely when completely full holds approximately $200,000. When the funds are depleted, the software beacons to the bank, alerting that the kiosk in out of money, which then an armored vehicle comes and replenishes the ATM with another $200,000 tray. A bank customer’s account is automatically updated once a transaction is complete to maintain real-time or near real-time account balance accuracy.

As of 8 April 2014, Microsoft ceased supporting Windows XP. In other words, Microsoft no longer provides software patches and updates for Windows XP.

Yet, banks have selected to contract with Microsoft for continued support of this legacy operating system running the bank’s proprietary software. Considering the costs and risks associated with such an infrastructure, why do you think banks prefer to continue using XP as opposed to upgrading to Windows 10?
