Identifying Problems and Taking Action: Lessons from the Speech

The speech by the Mexican President at the general debate session at the 75th sessions of the United Nations was an account of a democratic leader representing the whole nation in a true sense. This speech by the president of Mexico teaches a lot of things. The first thing is to look at the reasons for the problems which exist and the need for acknowledging the problem which exists is the first step towards solving the problem. The president talked about the history of Mexico and after overcoming colonialism and years of dictatorship the country faced a lot of problems but things are changing as the main reason behind the problem has been identified and steps have been taken to address this problem. The challenge of corruption which arose from the spending of public money along with money taken as a loan had put the problems in grave danger (United Nations , 2020). The other thing to learn from this speech was the need for leading with actions rather than preaching. The president in order to reduce the public spending on things that did not matter much as the presidential plane and elaborate security measures which put pressure on the resources of the country has been abandoned by him and this shows his seriousness and can motivate other people as well.

The main theme of the speech by the president was to eliminate the problems which have led to the deterioration of public life and politics and have resulted in exploitation and problems for the people of Mexico. The problems identified by the President were the prevalence of corruption, the focus on the needs of the rich people at cost of the poor people. The president also focused on the determination of the people to overcome the problems as the president divided the struggles of the people into four transformations. The country has been termed by the president in being the process of the fourth transformation as the country is trying to overcome the current set of problems. The president also appreciated the efforts of the people of the country referring to the record remittances which Mexico has received despite the Corona Pandemic (United Nations , 2020).

The opportunities which can be assessed for doing business in Mexico are the governmental efforts to attract investment which mean any business trying to expand there will enjoy the support of the government, the initiatives of the government to spend the public spending will mean better infrastructure, the cost of doing business in Mexico will be less due to the presence of cheap labour and resources. The deals signed by Mexico with the USA and Canada will create positive externalities for all the business as a lot of investment will help the other businesses (United Nations , 2020). The challenges or the risks which can be assessed are the presence of problems such as rampant corruption, even though the government is trying to get rid of the problem there is still a lot of corruption present in the country. The other challenges are red-tapism due to the strong presence of bureaucracy and lack of skilled workers.
