- Using the â1 GEOâ button, I want you to select oneregion and create a population pyramid. You may use either a state (including Puerto Rico) or a county. Please note the level of geographic detail that you are using (e.g., whether it is a state, city, metropolitan area).
- Create a population pyramid using Excel. Following convention, label the axes, identify males and females using differing colors, provide a title for the pyramid, and identify your data source. I will deduct points for each component missing from your population pyramid.
- When you are done, discuss your findings using 2 â 3 paragraphs. For example, you might summarize the major city characteristics, discuss why the pyramid is shaped the way it is, what group resides in this area, public services needed by this group, special problems the group might be expected to have, or what kinds of products have a market here.
The United Nations provides population-level data for most nations in the world. These data can be obtained on this page of the United Nationsâ website. Scroll down to the files labeled âPopulations by Age Groups â Maleâ and âPopulations by Age Groups â Female.â Download each file. It may a take a second, as they are quite large.

- Describe, in complete sentences, what the population pyramid for the United States shows. For example, you may want to summarize the general characteristics of the United States in the year that data are available. This should take several sentences.
- Identify a second nation of your choosing and create a population pyramid using Excel. Following convention, label the axes, identify males and females using differing colors, provide a title for the pyramid, and identify your data source. I will deduct points for each component missing from your population pyramid.
- Important:You must consider what year your data are from! Make sure that the data used for the United Statesâ population pyramid and your second nationâs population pyramid are the same.
- Describe, in complete sentences, what the population pyramid for this nation shows. For example, you might explain why the pyramid is shaped the way that it is, what the population structure suggests, and attempt to explain any clear trends. Based on this pyramid, at what stage in the demographic transition does this nation reside? Why do you believe this to be the case? This should take several sentences.
- Compare and contrast the population pyramids for the United States and the nation of your choosing. In doing this, use complete sentences. This should take several sentences.
