Tips on Creating an Informative Speech about a Cultural Topic

Purpose of the Speech

Purpose: The informative speeches:
Your next assignment is on a country you are not familiar with. Your culture speech will address the following items:
The language(s) that are spoken in that country.
The business protocol for that culture.
Religious values and beliefs
Any of the value dimensions such as (i.e., individualistic, collectivistic, masculine, feminine, power distance, etc.). 
Additional information you want to share with the class that has a severe impact on the country and its culture. Think outside the box. Special holidays, celebrations or traditions that are unlike those of the United States.

1.Give Country and geographical location. Show us on the map where you are.
2.Teach us about the facets of the country and its culture.

It is your goal to enrich our understanding. Give us new information to add into our current schemas so that we may become more educated and enlightened on the topic.

Time Limit- Each person will speak 3-5 minutes not including questions and answers.
Outline and Visual Aids:  You will submit your final edited outline with source or reference page to me at the time of speech. You will also be required to utilize some type of visual aids (Powerpoint) for your speech. If you decided to use handouts-- you will be responsible for distributing copies of these handouts to give to the class as a whole.

Sources: At least three sources per person should be documented. Please use credible, academically supported source. You may use the library databases and a few I have approved in class such as .gov (government site) or .mil (military site).

Each group will focus on a specific speech concept and prepare a presentation to the class covering the main points made by the authors of your sources. Make sure you choose sources that are relevant to our class. You will be graded on presentation and collaboration efforts mostly. Visual aids or interaction with audience mentioned above will be graded as well. Each of you will contribute with active equal parts as stated in the contract you signed. Having said that, if anyone in your group is not participating as I have asked, please inform me immediately.

Outline/Organization Checklist:
1.Learning Objective: Each group should clearly state their purpose and the learning objectives.

2.Make sure the group use a format that works with its numbers. Sometimes a group may use the same person for introduction and conclusion of speeches. You will decide this in your group depending on the numbers.

3.Transitions- Individual speakers should use transitions. These transitions should be smooth and CLEAR. Something that catches our attention as you move from one speaker to another. Sources/References: A single list of sources in MLA format 8th ed typed in alphabetical order will be attached at the end of the entire group outline. You are required to have at least 3 sources per group member. NO ONLINE SOURCES. Use credible academic sources through our library resources you learned of during the library tour.

4.Outline: The outline should follow the standard formatting throughout. Turn in a group outline. One outline to represent the whole group.

5.You will receive an individual grade for your group effort.

6.Group Speeches/Presentations are starting during the specific week I assigned and further directions will be given as we approach that week. 

7.Everyone in the group will be required to speak. Speeches are done Face to Face No excuses.
