Overview of the Organization

The purpose of this assignment is to provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding and ability to apply relevant principles and concepts covered in the course to the topics of organizational culture, quality and safety, interprofessional teams, and effective communication.  This assignment is associated with Student Learning Outcome #10: Students will synthesize discipline appropriate learning via a culminating assignment incorporating community engagement.  

You must provide content that includes your ELH assessments and support your conclusions; for example, if you state the Quality and Patient Safety movement has changed the culture, give specific example(s) of how.  Limit all discussions to one example to illustrate and affirm your point(s). 

In this section, include a brief description of the organization you have assessed, to include; the specific type of healthcare facility (e.g. hospital, clinic), the approximate size (e.g. # of beds, exam rooms) and the basic services provided.  Include a citation for the source of information. 

Quality and Patient Safety Movement: Describe the national Quality and Patient Safety Movement, the historical perceptive and aspects/examples of the movements (e.g. data collection and reporting, sharing best practices, transparency, financial incentives/disincentives) aimed at improving the quality and patient safety of the health care provided to patients. Be sure to use citations to support your content. NOTE: Please only use websites such as NAM, IHI, CMS, HHS, JC, which provide quality content.  Please do not be misled by the National Patient Safety Website (patientsafetymovement.org) as this is Not the Quality and Patient Safety Movement and in fact, it is best that the website not be used as a reference, as it is not peer reviewed (see requirements for use of scholarly websites). 

i.Influence on Organizational Culture: Describe how (or if) Q&S initiatives have influenced or changed the organizational culture. Limit your discussion to one specific area of focus.

Describe Effective Organizational Communication: Define effective communication processes and strategies from a leadership perspective (see related chapter in your textbook) clearly identifying what supports effective communication, and use citations to support content. Through your ELH observations, identify how leaders in the organization effectively communicate and provide one (1) specific example. 

Communication Barriers and Strategies: Identify barriers to effective organizational communication and use citations to support content.  Describe one (1) specific potential barrier to effective organizational communication and a potential strategy to address.
