Embarking on the dissertation is an exciting and daunting prospect for most scholars. The opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to a field of study is an inspiring responsibility, indicative of a scholar’s academic expertise, curiosity, and passions. Developing a dissertation is a journey; however, it is a journey that requires planning, patience, and a comprehensive awareness of process.
You certainly will not write your dissertation in a day, or for that matter, a week, a month, or maybe even a year, because the process involves developing and executing a research project. There are, however, strategies you can use to maximize your efficiency and productivity, which ultimately may reduce the time it takes you to complete your dissertation.
How do you settle on a topic for your dissertation? As you begin to work on your Prospectus Form keep in mind that the topic you select should intrigue you and keep you motivated throughout the dissertation process. It also should have substance and contribute to positive social change but be grounded in the literature that came before it. Finally, your topic should be original and provide unique insight into your area of interest, as well as meet the characteristics of doctoral-level research as detailed in the Prospectus Form.
This week, you will focus on your social problem and consider how your research might contribute to your discipline, field and/or profession. You will also begin to familiarize yourself with the Prospectus Form. Your final assignment in the course is a draft of your Prospectus Form. Each discussion and assignment is focused on a part of the Prospectus Form. You will receive feedback from your instructor and peers, enabling you to enhance your work throughout the term, culminating in the final draft Prospectus Form in Week 11.
