Missed Nursing Care, Statistics and Final Challenge: A Study

Part I: Problems

The following information will be used for Questions 1-7.

Missed nursing care (MNC) has been a global concern. A study examined how the nursing staff with different roles reported MNC differently. The study recruited 334 registered nurses (RNs) and 210 practical nurses (PNs) in acute care hospitals in Iceland. They completed a questionnaire, based on which an MNC score that assesses the extent of MNC is calculated. The MNC score ranges from 1 to 5, with a higher score indicating a greater extent of missed nursing care.

  1. What is the measurement scale of the MNC score? [3 marks]
  2. Given the mean MNC score of all the 544 nurses is 1.99. What additional information do you need in order to estimate the mean MNC score of all nurses? [4 marks]
  1. Now, you are given the following statistics: Conduct an appropriate analysis to examine if RNs and PNs differed in the extent of missing nursing care. Use df = ∞, if needed. [16 marks]

  2. Without doing any calculation, what can you say about the p-value for the test conducted in Question 3? [5 marks]

  3. Without doing any calculation, what can you say about the chance of committing a false negative error in your conclusion made for Question 3? [5 marks]

  4. The study investigator would then like to determine the difference between RNs and PNs MNC scores. Provide the relevant analysis and conclusion. Note that you may use the information provided in Question 3. [12 marks]

  5. The MNC score can be categorized as low, normal, and high. Among all the 544 nurses, 214, 209, and 121 had low, normal, and high MNC score, respectively. Estimate the percentage of nurses who had a high MNC score. [10 marks]

The following information will be used for Questions 8-9.

The Class 2022 had 202 students who took the Statistics course. Their mean score in the Final Test was 80.

  1. Suppose a friend of yours concluded 50% of students had a test score higher than 80 with an estimation error of 0.07. Are you skeptical of your friend’s claim? Explain why. [10 marks]
  1. For the Class 2023, suppose the mean score of the Final Test is 70. The friend of yours now concludes that Class 2022 did better than Class 2023 in the Final Test. Are you skeptical of your friend’s claim? Explain why. [10 marks]

Part II: Final Challenge

  1. Do a test in the Test Room on Moodle. [10 marks]

There are 10 randomly selected multiple choice questions. In order to get full marks, you need to get a correct percentage of at least 90%. Any percentage below 90% will receive pro-rata marks.

Note:

  • You can check if you had your answer to a question correct. If the answer is incorrect, you can re-attempt the question, but the no mark will be given to the question.
  • After completing all questions, click “Submit all and finish”. You should then see a summary page of your graded work. Please save a copy by printing the page into a file for record. There is no need to submit the summary page file, and please do keep it in case of any technical problem with your submission in Moodle.
  • If you cannot attain at least 90% correct, you can re-attempt the quiz. The one with the highest grade will be automatically counted.
  1. Develop ONE test question with 5 choices and indicate which one is the correct answer with an explanation.

Note that questions are considered as good if they are well-defined with a correctly identified unique answer, carry a substantive difference from existing questions, and are health-related. They will be incorporated into the existing question database with students’ names and classes acknowledged. Please also indicate if you have a preference of how you would like yourself to be acknowledged if selected. [15 marks]
