A clinical research nurse is a nurse who provides intensive patient care in case of any clinical trial so as to avoid any complexities or issues during the trial. They have a wide range of operations and duties and also have a wide experience as well. They may have to administer certain prescribed medication or perform various intensive treatments like chemotherapy, radiotherapy and more. They need to collect the data from them and analyse how effective or useful the treatment was. They also need to comply with the various safety protocols throughout the course of their trials.
The role of a clinical research nurse can be very vivid as they perform a variety of tasks. As mentioned before, they perform clinical researches and trials. This means that they must ensure that the patients appearing for the trial are free of any disease or infection that might affect the research study. Drug administering is an important part of research. Hence, the research nurses must monitor the dosage of the drugs along with various other treatments which may be necessary for the clinical trials. Regular assessments and diagnostics test is very important in these researches. The research nurses are responsible for this and noticing the changes occurring in the patients’ body. These observations are very important as they must make detailed documentary on them. If the condition of the patients decline, then they must provide proper care to them. The nurses keep proper record of all the changes which includes both immediate and spontaneous changes along with possible side effects and medical histories. Safety protocols are very important in any research and it is the duty of these research nurses to ensure that. Alongside that, emergencies are quite common in any clinical research so dealing with them with appropriate care is very important. Apart from these, research nurses are responsible for proper collaboration with the researchers and research teams during the complete duration and study of the trial. Their cooperation is essential for the success of any trial. Hence, they also supervise the working of various other nursing staffs, volunteers and research assistants during the course of a research.
The importance of clinical research is unparalleled in the research industry. The Covid 19 pandemic has revealed its importance and how much dependent we are on these researches. With new and innovative ideas developing every time, the nursing field would innovate as well. This makes the research nurses the best pioneers for revolutionising the nursing industry and the whole world.
A major example of a clinical nursing research was the trial of the vaccines for Covid 19 pandemic. This was a research that was carried out all over the world. Hence, a lot of clinical research nurses were required for various different purposes. Being one of the most deadly known pandemic to mankind, the trials for Covid 19 vaccines were very important for the whole world. Several countries tried but many failed in the critical trial with more than 100 different trials being carried out. Hence, the critical research nurses became more important than ever during this period. There was even the lack of volunteers for the critical trials resulting in several nurses volunteering for the dosage themselves. They had to track and monitor the various dosages, their immediate and long-term responses, and the health of the volunteers and even analyse the growing curve of the Covid 19 pandemic around the world. This was undoubtedly one of the most important and widely renowned clinical researches where these nurses were involved.
Research nurses are professionals who are conducting various trials and have specialized knowledge in the field of medicine and in the intricacies of clinical research. In addition to being a registered nurse, nurses who work in this area usually have a master’s degree or a Ph.D. in nursing, medicine, biomedical science, or a related field. There are a series of steps which a person must take in order to become a professional clinical research nurse. The first step is to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing also known as BSN. This is the common foundation course for every professional who are in the field of research. This is also the most suitable degree for their long term career goals. A BSN degree gives students a solid foundation in physiology, anatomy, medical ethics, pharmacology, and other areas of patient care that are essential for research nurses.
The next step is to pass the NCLEX-RN or National Council Licensure Examination. This examination is conducted by the NCSBN or National Council of State Boards of Nursing which establishes standards and exam contents. The examination checks the ability of a nurse to provide proper care to patients when necessary. The next step is to get a license in the state where a nurse wishes to start working. The Board of Nursing of the state decides on the requirements of the license approval for a nurse. The next most important step is to gain experience, at least for a year in clinical research setting. This would allow them to meet the criteria for graduation programs and other important aspects. The next important step is to obtain the Master of Science in Nursing degree or a PH.D. in Nursing. This step is not mandatory with several nurses having a successful career without the higher degree. But, there are several perks of having it, primarily obtaining higher positions in the clinical research industry. Project Manager, Principal investigator, Research Coordinator and various other posts have the minimum requirement of a graduate nurse. Finally, the nurses must obtain the certification as a Clinical Research Professional. This means that the nurse has research expertise, professional skills, essential knowledge and abilities to carry out the research. This certificate is the most recognized symbol in the industry and the most respected acknowledgment.
