The Metamorphosis is said to be the novella which was penned down by a writer named, Franz Kafka. This novel was published in the year, 1915 is considered to be one of the best works by Kafka.

This novel tells the story about a salesman named Gregor Samsa. Gregor Samsa was a salesman who would travel door to door. It was one day when he had woken up and found that he had been turned into a very large insect. This is when he looks around the entire room and witnesses the fact that everything is normal and thus goes to sleep again and then later forgot about what just happened to him. While sleeping, he was trying to roll over when he had seen that he could not do it anymore especially because of the new body which he had got. He was seen to trying scratching his stomach when he sees that he has several legs by which automatically he becomes extremely disgusted. It has been seen that he reflects on the fact that how his life has become dreary because he is a salesman that has to travel and how he could just quit his jobs if his family was not financially dependent on him. He then immediately checked the time and realised that he had missed the train he would take to work as he had overslept.

Gregor’s mother was knocking the door and while answering his mother, he had found that there was a change in his voice. The family also noticed this change and though that he was ill and asked him to open his bedroom door, He was struggling as he could not move properly and overheard that his office manager had come to his apartment to enquire about the fact that why he did not come to work. He then tells his family members that he will be opening the door after sometime.

The mother pleads and tells the office manager that Gregor is a devoted and a hardworking person and during that time, his sister is seen to cry in the adjacent toom. The office manager however does not listen and needs an explanation for his unprofessional behaviour. He states the fact the recent work by Gregor had not been upto the mark and there was a possibility that he had stolen some money from the organisation. During this time, Gregor was seen to claim that he was dizzy and asked the office manager to leave his parent. Meanwhile, the office manager and his family start discussing about the weird voice and Grete is seen to leave the house so that she could bring a locksmith and a doctor.

After sometime, Gregor opens the lock of the door with the mouth, seeing him turn into a huge insect had terrified his family members as well as his office manager. The mother immediately faints and the father starts crying. Gregor asks the office manager through quite a speech to provide a good review for him in the workplace as traveling salesmen become privy to negative gossip however, the office manager is seen to leave the apartment as he was mortified. Gregor tried to catch the manager as he was trying to get out fast however discovers the fact that he can crawl because of the legs he has got. The father picked up the cane of the office manager and a newspaper so that Gregor to get into his room. During this process, Gregor had injured himself as he got stuck in his doorway. However, the father pushed him and immediately closed the door.

In the evening, Gregor is seen to wake up and sees bread and a bowl of milk in his room. He then thinks about the pride he had because he was able to take proper care of his own family and is worried that what would they feel at this time. Gregor then prays and vows that he would make ends meet so that he does not become a burden to his family. Later, in the morning, his sister opens his door however closes it when she finds Gregor under the sofa. Grete notices that he had not eaten and then brings some food so that Gregor can eat in peace and alone. It can be seen that he likes the taste of that moldiest food which was given to hme and does not like vegetables. The sister then comes into the room to sweep all the scraps however he watches Grete while he was under the sofa. Grete then informs her parents about how much Gregor started eating.

Gregor is seen to spend a lot of the time listening to what the family has been communicating and learns the fact that all the money that he would give to his patents were not spent and he was seen to be product of all the contributions he made for the wellbeing of his family. The family is seen to discuss about how they need to be employed to support the family which makes him sad as his father was quite old and had become completely out of shape, his mother was an asthma patient which made them unfit to work. During this time, he feels sad and also thinks about how he had become quite distant from his family however was still close to his sister that he would plan to send his sister to the music school one day so that she could learn the violin.

Gregor learns that his father had got a job at the bank and noticed the changes in him. Gregor however later got an injury due to an incident which had limited his mobility. It has been seen that family felt pitiful towards him and left the door of the bedroom open so that Gregor is able to watch them from a distant. Gregor sees that his father slept, and the mother was sewing lingerie for one boutique and his sister had been studying French as well as shorthand so that she could get herself a job. During this time, the father had become very sad and was seen to stay up late almost every night.

Gregor gets to know about the fact that the family is selling the jewellery they owned so that they could get some money and replace their current maid with a cleaning lady who would be quite elderly. He feels that it is his presence that makes them feel trapped. Gregor during this time stops eating and sleeping as he constantly thinks about his family and all the past. He feels sad for not being able to help them but also get angry as he was always neglected. He realizes that his sister does not take care and is least bothered about him. Grete is seen to become upset with the mother when she cleans his room.

The cleaning lady always looks at Gregor and notices him. However, the cleaning lady accidently had kept the door open one night when the boarders had come to the house. the boarders were seen to dine in the dining room whereas the family was eating their meals in the kitchen. Gregor notices the fact that the boarders are quite choosy when it comes to the food which is prepared by his mother and his sister. Grete plays the violin which makes the boarders invite the entire family in the parlor. The boarders are seen to lose interest after sometime after they listen to her play the violin. However, Gregor feels proud and wants him to take his sister back to the room and convey her about the plan he had to send her to the music school where she could learn even better.

Later, one of the boarders was seen to see Gregor and then cry out. Gregor’s father immediately rushed the boarders out as they said that they will not pay the rent and move out. Grete tells her parents to stop thinking that the big bug is their son and should find a way so that they can get rid of this bug from the house. The father then wishes that he could tell Gregor why it was time for him to leave when Grete counter stated that if Gregor would have understood his parents and the issues they are going through then he would have left before and spare them from the pain. Gregor feels very bad and goes back to his room. Gregor thinks that it is time for him to pass so that he can lessen the burden of his family and thus when the dawn breaks Gregor dies.

In the morning, the lady who cleaned the house discovered his body. The family had gathered infront of the corpse where Grete noticed that Gregor had become very skinny. The father then kicked all the boarders from the apartment and then decided to go for a walk. The lady stated that she had dumped the body however the family did not care and the father then decides to fire the lady that night. Grete along with her parents leave this apartment and go to the countryside. The family discusses all their finances and then discovers the fact that they have a lot of money in comparison to what they expected. The family decides to shift to a smaller apartment but in a better location. Grete had become an attractive woman and thus, the parents thought she needs to get married. When the family reached their location, Grete stood up and stretched which indicated that she had emerged after a very long time of confinement like coming out of a shell or a cocoon which is where the story ends.
