“I Stand Here Ironing” story. - Introduction: * Introduce the story you’re writing about, and give a VERY brief summary of what the story is about. * Be sure to state the title of the story and the name of the author. The first time you mention the author’s name, give the FULL name. (After that, refer to them by their LAST name, NOT their first.) * Raise the ISSUE that you see: a question about the story for which there’s no clear answer. (reasonable people can disagree—it’s arguable.) State your THESIS, or your CLAIM—your answer to the issue you raise. - Body: Support your claim—show WHY you hold the position you do. Refer to the text itself, mainly, for evidence § CITE page (and, possibly, paragraph) number for specific quotes or parts of the story Explain and interpret the text; don’t just throw out a quote and expect that it does the work for you. Your job is to show how it supports your interpretation. Reference or comparison to other stories is possible (as I do above in referring to “Orientation” while discussing “Girl”); as is a reference to other sources. CITE them if you use them. Several paragraphs for the Body, at least. - Conclusion: Have one. Wrap up, restate, give a final thought. - Works Cited Page: * Have One! * Use MLA format for layout and listings. Include every work that you have cited in your essay. Your list WILL have at least ONE work on it: the story that you are discussing!
