Guidelines for completing the question assignment

You have until this 11:59pm on the due date (see syllabus) to type up your answers for each of these questions into a document that you will submit through Canvas.  Don't forget that you must answer all five questions.  Each question is worth 40 points, so it is important that you take the time and give thoughtful answers.  Here are the requirements for the answers along with their maximum point values:

  • Each answer must be typed on its own individual page(s), with the question at the top of the page.  The answers must be in Times New Roman, 12-point font, 1-inch margins, double spaced and each answer must be at least one full page, it can me more.
  • Each answer must demonstrate that the student understands the historical issue(s) being addressed in the question.
  • Each answer must contain thoughtful analysis of the historical question and give details that demonstrate mastery of the topic question.
  • Each answer must contain examples and evidence to support statements/analysis given in response to the question.
  1. Cortes and Pizarro both took empires with only a handful of men.  What was the most critical component to their success despite the overwhelming odds against them?  Support your answer.
  2. Why did Puritans establish their "City Upon a Hill" in Massachusetts Bay Colony?  Evaluate how successful they were in achieving their goals and the success of the colony in general.
  3. Describe the Great Awakening in colonial America.  What makes the Great Awakening significant?  Use examples to defend your answer.
  4. Explain why the colonists and parliament both believed they were being reasonable in the build up to the Revolutionary War.  Give specific examples to prove your case.
  5. Explain human equality, natural rights, and natural law, as it was believed at the time of the writing of the Declaration of Independence.

The assignment will allow you to submit a .doc, docx, or .pdf and will close at 5:00am after the due date.

You will have full access to your notes and the posted videos so my expectation is that you will be able to come up with detailed, thoughtful answers.  Remember that the key to success on these questions is your ability to analyze the information and present that analysis in your response.  Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

  • Make sure to follow the format and get the minimum length.  That is the easiest way to get 25% of the points for the exam.
  • Do not save each question as a different file.  Use the page break to separate the questions on their own individual page and submit only one file.
  • Your best sources are the lectures and your textbook, but you may use other sources to help you formulate your answers, but DO NOT copy and paste from websites as part of your answers. The only time something should be word for word in an answer is if you are directly quoting a historical figure relevant to the question.  The answers need to be in your OWN WORDS.  If you copy from a website, you will receive a zero for the question.
  • Due dates on exams are very critical. Late midterms will be accepted only with a VERY COMPELLING REASON, which may require documentation depending on the reason.  Final exams CANNOT BE TURNED IN LATE FOR ANY REASON.
