Task

Introduction to Creative Writing ENGL190-02 Fall 2021

Assignment: Final Portfolio

Due Date: Dec 13 @ 1pm PST over eLearn

Length: 4 polished pieces featuring 2 pieces revised from previous assignments and 2 new pieces (any genre) + 250-word reflection

Weight: 30% Details For your Final Portfolio, you will compile and submit four (4) original pieces you have written this term (September to December).

Two (2) of these pieces will be significantly revised from your previous assignments, and two (2) of these pieces will be new. Your final pieces may be any genre (creative nonfiction, poetry, fiction, stage & screenwriting) and should make use of the literary devices, concepts and techniques we’ve covered this term.

For example: the spectrum of abstraction, situation and story, persona & narration, lyric, epistolary mode, figurative language, action & plot, narration & perspective, characterization, setting, genre, dialogue, etc.

These final pieces may stem from prompts we’ve done in class or they may relate to any of our lessons, readings, discussions or any other source of inspiration. Your portfolio will showcase a diverse range of your creative writing skills with special attention paid to literary devices, concepts, and techniques we’ve studied. I also want to encourage you to experiment and have fun with whatever directions you run with! Your two revised pieces should be edited to the best of your abilities and consider feedback from me and the insight that comes taking the time to revise your creative writing.

In your 250-word reflection, please address the concepts, techniques, and inspiration at play in your pieces and outline the steps you undertook to edit your work. Please consider the thematic and aesthetic choices you made and why, how your poems connect to readings, prompts, specific techniques/devices/concepts, and lessons, and how editing affected your understanding of your writing.

I look forward to reading your work! Evaluation I am looking for creativity and care in these pieces as well as the ability to apply in thoughtful ways the specific literary forms, devices, techniques and concepts we’ve studied this term. With your two revised pieces, I want to see significant alterations that are the result of careful editing choices. In your reflection, I want you to comment on the writing and editing process, your use of specific devices and techniques and how you see your pieces connecting to readings, lessons and prompts.

She had most definitely developed a crush on the boy next door ever since the time he moved in with his father but didn’t like socializing much considering she is a bit introvert that has led her consistently suffer from social anxiety. Alice was not the usual girl you would take at a bar and hangout as a casual friend for she had always shared her intimacy with John Keats or Jane Austen that filled her lonesome life.

In New York, starting at the age of seven, Alice started developing a certain bit of interest towards reading books and novels in taking deeper meanings of life and love from renowned authors like Shakespeare, Charlotte Bronte Margaret Mitchell that not only led her to become an avid reader but also a bit desperate for romanticism. Despite her yearn for romanticism, the bibliophilic nature did contribute little to her social demeanor for she had never seemed much intent towards communicating with anyone except me. Safe to say that I am the only human friend of her in the entire school who knew about her tendency of averting from mingling with people.

Despite her reclusive nature, Alice did let me in on her present circumstances even at times it does sound a bit embarrassing. As a friend I have tried pulling out her reticent persona by taking quotes from her favorite fiction novels but alas it did not seem much helpful in making her outgoing. After struggling to let herself be interacted with others, Alice did confess that it might be because of her familial circumstance for her parents had never seemed much attentive towards Alice nor one could state them as a happy couple due to their prolonged quarrels.

While she had tried leaving past the issue and obviate the pain, it was time that she confront her enduring forestall. As John Green mildly puts, “That’s the thing about Pain, it demands to be felt”, Alice planned to confront her long suppressed pain by communicating with her parents where she decided to move away from the house and instead complete her studies in literature in the University of California. While the time she was leaving, her trembling lips could make out only three words out of her mouth.

See you soon.

When? I replied to which she gave only a smile.

She came back after exactly six and half years from that day with a handsome gentleman and title of doctorate. She seemed happy and was entirely different from the Alice whom I have last seen in her sophomore years. She satiated my curiosity by mildly stating,

A lot has changed over the years. Much has seemed to happen that I cannot wait to tell you.

Seeing this forthcoming and confident Alice did seem as an amazement and at the same time felt like an entirely different person. Understanding my bewildered expressions, Alice claims,

You were right. I should have confronted with my pain much before.

Had I done this before I might have acquainted with that handsome boy in our neighbor, she giggled.
