Employee Motivation and Turnover: Implementing Maslow's Theory
Task:
Question 1 Employee motivation: An organisational behaviour that is closely related to retention and turnover is employee motivation. The word motivation originated from the concept of motive which describes an individual’s drives and needs that are essential to achieve certain desires (Chaudhary & Sharma, 2012). Several definitions of motivation were provided by different authors. According to Maduka and Okafor (2014), motivation refers to the willingness of an individual to put greater efforts to attain particular goals. Therefore, the concept of motivation stresses on an individual’s feeling of enthusiasm and attentiveness to be able to achieve his or her goals in an effective manner. Correspondingly, Robbins (2001) reported that the motivation of an individual represents the energies that could inspire, direct, and maintain or enhance his/ her efforts.
In the capacity of an HR consultant you have been hired by an organisation experiencing high turnover rates. Your task is to consult on how employee motivation can reduce turnover. Discuss how the organisation could adopt and implement Maslow’s theory of motivation to solve their turnover challenges (provide practical examples).
