4. Research the authors that Krakauer claims influenced Chris. Are the ideas and beliefs of these writers similar to the beliefs of Chris? Some authors you might want to look at include: H.G. Wells, Mark Twain, Walt Whitman, Jack London, Robert Frost, Henry David Thoreau and Leo Tolstoy.

5. Do you think Chris was suffering from a mental illness or do you think he was on a grand adventure? Was Chris suffering from depression? Was he suffering from schizophrenia?

6. Is the novel Into the Wild appropriate for an English 1C class? Explain why you agree or disagree with this idea. You will want to look at book reviews on the novel. You may want to examine the various authors and explain how the book relates to literature.

7. Afer reading the book evaluate Krakauer's research. What do you make of his novel? Does it hurt the book that Krakauer includes his personal stories into the novel? What do you make of the chapter in which he discusses other people who went to Alaska? Do the reasons he gave that Chris was able to survive in Alaska seem valid? Christopher Knight managed to live in the wild for 27 years and his story has also been turned into a book.

Compare the story of Christopher Knight with Into the Wild. How is the story of Chris McCandless similar to Christopher Knight’s journey? How was it different? You will want to research Christopher Knight as well. Since his story has also been turned into a book. Do you think I should teach it?
