Knowing that students learn concretely, it is best to teach with our actions and clear words. What are the three specific temperaments named in chapter 1 and how do they breakdown attributes to success or lack of the classroom management system?

The three specific temperaments named are fence-sitters, compliant, and strong-willed students. A fence sitter is a type of student is one who can be swayed in the direction you want them in. They are cooperative and are skilled researchers. These types of students aren’t usually big risk takers and would prefer to sit back and observe.

A compliant student is one who will respond to any sorts of discipline. These students would rather please and cooperate than fight against the rules.

A strong-willed student is one who will test the limits put on them. They will push against authority and needed a tougher consequence for them to want to follow the rules. These types of students are considered to be the “movers and shakers” and “aggressive researchers.” They students are known to test teachers and push them to the limits.

Think about your discipline approach. Is it permissive? Is it Punitive? Or is it a mixed approach? In chapter 6 we learned about the democratic approach. After learning about this discipline approach, how do you see yourself using this in your own classroom? What would the result be with your students using the democratic approach?

I only work with the strong-willed students in the school I am assigned to. I have to be creative with the discipline I use in the classroom. I consider myself to be more of permissive when it comes to these students. What works for one, doesn’t work for another. I am still learning what works best for each student, but I am getting there. I can do one discipline approach and it will work for that one student, but the other would backfire on me. When I get my own classroom, I can see myself utilizing the democratic approach a lot more. As a para, if I lean towards that practice, the students’ rebel against me. I tend to leave that approach up to the teacher. I’ve seen the democratic approach be used daily and it is very effective. The students do get upset at first but they change their behavior to earn their privileges back.
