Students pursuing academic courses in disciplines in humanities, languages, and literature, typically follow MLA formatting and MLA citation style when working on their papers and documenting sources. When citing a website in MLA or Modern Language Association, students need to add up the following factors in the same order as said:

  • Other contributors (names and roles)
  • Version
  • Number
  • Publisher
  • Publication Date
  • Location of the source (URL or page numbers).

Previously, students and researchers creating an MLA website citation were not required to include the URL. With the introduction of MLA 8th edition, it is recommended to have URL unless the professors instructed otherwise.

Example:

Citing A Website With No Author

Websites, which usually consist of official information or are published by government houses, do not contain the name of the author. While the information showcased there are essential for students to use in their assignments, they cannot name a person in place of the author. • For the title, always use double quotation marks around the title or abbreviated title.
  • Website article without author will not be italicised in the reference list or in-text.

Citing A Website In Text

Citing a website source of information in the text will have the author/s name, followed by a period, and the link of the website. Students can also include numbered paragraphs or sections, sans additional information. • If no publication, modification or revision date is available for the concerned website, provide an access date (e.g. accessed December 2, 2020).
  • References to website content must be added in the footnotes, but not necessarily in the bibliography or list of references.

  • Each citation of Harvard style will include these factors: name of the author(s), year published, title, the city published, publisher, pages used.
  • Citations should be listed in alphabetical order, with the author’s last name in this style.
