  • In-text citation in the APA style uses the author’s last name and the year of publication.
  • For direct quotations, include the page number as well.
  • For sources with no date use n.d. (for no date) in place of the year.
  • APA format structure: Author, A. (Year, Month Date of Publication). Article title. Retrieved from URL.

In-text citation: (Greenhouse, 2020).

Citing A Website In MLA Style

Students pursuing academic courses in disciplines in humanities, languages, and literature, typically follow MLA formatting and MLA citation style when working on their papers and documenting sources. When citing a website in MLA or Modern Language Association, students need to add up the following factors in the same order as said:

  • Author
  • Title of source
  • Title of the container
  • Other contributors (names and roles)
  • Version
  • Number
  • Publisher
  • Publication Date
  • Location of the source (URL or page numbers).

Citing A Website With No Author

Websites, which usually consist of official information or are published by government houses, do not contain the name of the author. While the information showcased there are essential for students to use in their assignments, they cannot name a person in place of the author. To eliminate issues like these, here is what students should do-

  • When there is no author for a website, place the title in the first position of the reference entry.
  • For In-text refereeing, cite the first couple of words in the reference list entry.
  • For the title, always use double quotation marks around the title or abbreviated title.
  • Website article without author will not be italicised in the reference list or in-text.

Citing A Website In Text

Citing a website source of information in the text will have the author/s name, followed by a period, and the link of the website. Students can also include numbered paragraphs or sections, sans additional information. If the sources you have found have more than one author, the in-text citation will have both the authors’ last names, in the order in which they are listed in the source, and your works cited.

Citing A Website In Chicago Style

If you are worried about citing a website in Turabian or Chicago style, please note that the guidelines vary with each new edition. Currently, The Chicago Manual of Style Referencing (17th ed.) will have the following features within:

  • Website citations should include author, title, owner or sponsor of the site, date of publication, modification or revision and URL.
  • The title of the chosen website will not be within quotation marks neither will be in italics.  Titled sections within a website should be put within quotation marks.
  • If no publication, modification or revision date is available for the concerned website, provide an access date (e.g. accessed December 2, 2020).
  • References to website content must be added in the footnotes, but not necessarily in the bibliography or list of references.

Citing A Website In Harvard Style

When it comes to citing a website in Harvard referencing style, students from across disciplines can use it to mention their academic sources. For an accurate in-text citing of a website in this style, here is what students should do-

  • In-text citations are used during directly quoting or paraphrasing a source of information. These sources are located in the body of the text and contain a segment at the full citation list.
  • The reference list is placed at the end of the assignment and display total citations for sources used in the project.
  • Each citation of Harvard style will include these factors: name of the author(s), year published, title, the city published, publisher, pages used.
  • Citations should be listed in alphabetical order, with the author’s last name in this style.

APA Citing A Website With No Author

  • If a website source does not specify an author/s the title instead.
  • In the reference list, sources without an author begin with the title in sentence case.
