MECM20010 Comparing Media Systems

The short essay gives you the opportunity to reflect on content covered in the first part of the unit, which surveys different types of media system. In an increasingly connected world, our experience with media is no longer confined within a single media system: different media systems interact and overlap with each other and have created new issue, opportunity, tension, and possibility that reconfigure contemporary media landscapes.

 1.‘In today’s globalized world, “media system” is no longer a useful concept to examine the developments, issues, and transformations of contemporary media. ’Do you agree with this statement?

2.Reflect on your experience with media through the conceptual lens of media systems: In your experience with media, is there a system that is more dominant than the others? If so, why do you think it has become the dominant one? If not, why not?

3.Considering the contemporary media landscape-what issues are you, as a media user, most concerned with? How is/are the issue(s) related to the structural logics of the media system(s) your discussion refers to? And is there a role for the state to play in addressing the issue(s) through regulations?
