Questions: BIOSTATISTICS

Specific Items to be Included in Each Problem

BIOSTATISTICS

NOTE: You must perform and provide the following for each problem to receive full credit. Make sure these items are presented in an organized and logical format for my review. I will not search for information in your presentation but will rather deduct points for an incomplete and unorganized presentation of your analyses.

Specific Items to be Included in Each Problem: Using the appropriate language in experimental biology and statistics, prepare a paragraph that states and outlines the research problem and your use of appropriate statistical methods. A second paragraph will summarize your findings, statistical results, and conclusions as they might appear in the results section or abstract of a publication. Examples for how such a paragraph may be presented have been discussed or review the peer-review literature for further examples. Be sure to provide sufficient documentation to convince the reader (me) of your findings. This paragraph may include the presentation tables and figures to support your findings if correctly referenced in your results paragraph as in publication.

Each problem should have its own cover page. All support material must be neatly organized and presented after your answer paragraphs. Within each of your summary paragraphs, be sure that the following are considered and addressed:

  • Indicatethe most appropriate analysis used and why. Be sure to indicate models, factorials, and other appreciate considerations of your
  • Statethe null hypotheses that will be tested with the indicated analysis and be sure to state and test assumptions for those statistical
  • Performthe appropriate analyses and correctly report all pertinent statistical results paying attention to format. Make sure all assumptions are stated, tested, and presented with your analyses and these results are summarized in your

Attach all computations and printouts to support your findings which are summarized in your results paragraph. A researcher collects the following sample of standard lengths (SL) for largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) from lake Texoma (n = 100) and wants to summarize the population including a presentation of size class.

Problem #2
You sample leaf length (cm) for a population of oak trees on the campus at Sam Houston State University and obtain the following data and report your findings.
Y1 = 5.5
Y2  = 5.7
Y3  = 8.2
Y4  = 6.3
Y5 = 10.2
Y6  = 11.0
Y7  = 12.2
Y8 = 8.2

You learn that a colleague of yours has sample 140 of the same oak species in the Sam Houston National Forrest and found a mean of 12.6, and a variance of 0.72. You wish to summarize and present potential differences in the populations graphically and determine which population of oak tree has the greatest variability, if these variances are statistically similar or different, and offer a potential biological explanation for this variability in leaf length.

In a recent study at Lake Raven in Walker County, Texas, a graduate student collected 50 alligators for stomach contents analysis. Of these alligators, 32 contained recent prey. Based on the literature, 48% of all alligators would be expected to have recent prey in their stomach. Help this student statistically compare their data with the literature and comment on if this data matches the expected. Indicate if your analysis is a one or two-tailed test and explain why. Biologically, what can you conclude from the student’s findings.

Problem #4
In the same study, spatial ecology of juvenile alligators, the graduate student at Sam Houston State establishes a series of 50 linear sections along the shoreline of lake Rayburn at the Huntsville State Park. Each quadrat is 100 m. The graduate student records the number of alligators in each section. Using the below data, comment on the spatial distribution of juvenile alligators in Lake Rayburn.
