Grendel is the popular character of the poem “Beowulf” , here author depicts the monstrous “grendel” as the villain in the poem , he is portrayed as the large bearlike monsters which has spend his last twelve years locked in the war against the humans. John Gardener’s “Grendel” depicts as the monster, while journeying the audiences though incidents, his life stories becomes, achievable kind of self realization. The satisfying story begins when the novel skips a bit of time back in order to enlighten the lost Grendel’s personal lives.
As a young monster, Grendel spend his lives with his mother inside the cave away from the human civilization , one day he discovers a lake full of fire snakes , decides to swim through it and reaches the humans world , here he gets attacked by humans until his mother rescues him.
The character initially states that he developed much time in observing humans and with the time it has developed a great contempt towards religion, he in small times realises that the world is meaningless and is destructive.
