Describe the evolution of the volume of exports and imports. For this task you will need data aggregated over all products and all partners for the whole period available.
- Generate a table with the time series of the country’s total exports and imports including the annual percentage change and the trade balance for every year.
- Add to the table the aggregate world exports for each year, as well as the annual percentage change.
- Compute and include in the table your country’s export share in world exports for each year, as well as the annual percentage change in the share.
- Generate a line diagram for your country’s exports share over time. Briefly discuss your findings.
Task 2. Analyse the degree of integration of your country to the world economy. In this point, in addition to the data downloaded in Task 1 you will need to download GDP at current US$.
- Generate a table and a line diagram where you show the evolution of your country’s openness to trade for the whole period of available data. Also include in your table the annual change over time. Trade openness is computed using the following formula:
- Briefly discuss your findings. Make sure that your analysis includes references to specific political or economic events that may relate to the evolution of the openness to trade in your country. Support your analysis by research on relevant literature when appropriate.
Task 3. Analyse the pattern of exports specialisation. For this task you will need to download your country’s exports data disaggregated by industries (SITC 3-digit level). Download the data for the earliest year available, one year around the middle of your time series (possibly end of the 1980’s or beginning of the 1990’s), and for the most recent year in your dataset (if you find some missing observations that is ok, as long as there is enough data to conduct the analysis just work with what you have).
- In your Excel spread sheet(s) calculate the index of Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) for the manufacturingindustries at the SITC 3-digit level using the relevant data. Please keep RCA values to 3 decimal places. Note that the data downloaded may include manufacturing and non-manufacturing industries. The manufacturing industries are those with coding between 5 and 8. The RCA of an industry of country in year is given by:
where !"# is the export value of industry of country at year . The denominator incorporates aggregated world values (all countries).
- Generate 3 tables where you list the top 10 industries by comparative advantage in each of the selected years (one table per year). Each table should include the rank, industry ID, industry name and the corresponding RCA.
Note: The index represents the share of a particular industry in the total exports of a country, relative to the share of that industry in world trade. A country is said to have a revealed comparative advantage in an industry when the corresponding index is greater than 1 ( > 1).
- Briefly discuss your findings analysing the patterns and trends of comparative advantage. What do you think are the sources of the revealed comparative advantage and its change over time (in case a change is observed)? Your discussion should be supported not only by the data analysis but also by research on relevant literature and the theories studied in the subject.
Task 4. Analyse the geographical pattern of trade. For this task you will need to download trade data by trade partner.
- Using aggregate exports by trade partner identify and report the top ten export destinations (by export value) of your chosen country. Generate a table where you include the top ten partners in each of the years selected in Task 3. Discuss your findings. Your discussion should be supported not only by the data analysis but also by research on relevant literature and the theories studied in the subject.

Argentina is one of the growing nations and since many decades it has been indulged in trading with different nations around the world. From the previous tables it can be seen that trade balance of the argentine though was not high, yet it remains substantial over the period providing the nation ability to withstand against the market crunches. During the early 60s trade balance of the Argentina was not that great, however, post 1965 it started to rise (Palazzo and Rapetti 2017). With the rise in the export of primary goods, the nations started to earn higher amount of trade balance and it provided much amount of prosperity to the performance of the state over the time. From the above figure it can be seen that the Argentina has been facing increased share in world trade since last six decades and the major change came in during the 1965. Post this period, Argentina become one of the rapidly growing state and over the year trade share for the Argentina increased gradually (Oita et al. 2016). As of now, there has been sharp rise in the world export share by the Argentina due to the rise in the export of the soybean oil, white and other farming based products. Considering the trend of the Argentina share in the world export, it can be said that the state has faced reducing in the exportation during the Global Financial Crisis situation back in 2008, however, robust agricultural performance back in 20014 has aided the economy to come back on track again (Sancho et al. 2018).

Table 4: Openness of Argentina
Source: (Wits.worldbank.org. 2018)
Considering the trade openness of Argentina it can be seen that over the years, trade openness of Argentina has increased and later it has fell as well. Since the 1993 until 2001it increased marginally and post that until 2004 it increased sharply. From 2004 to 2008 it remained almost same and post that, trade openness of Argentina started to fall gradually (Hye and Lau 2015). During the present date, it can be seen that trade openness of the country is rising again. One of the major reason for the rise in the trade openness during the 2001 in order to control the crisis in the domestic economy government of Argentina utilised the trade path to control the market that gave rise to the trade openness. And when it comes to post 2001 fall, it can be said that Global Financial Crisis is one of the major reason that has allowed the economy to restrict its trade openness for further deterioration of the economy (Sebri and Ben 2014).

From the above tables it can be seen that during 1963 Argentina has highest RCA against USA in case of the manufacturing industry and contrary to this during 2016 Brazil ranked first in case of RCA of Argentina in the same industry. It depicts that Argentina has moved forward in order to gain much amount of prominence in manufacturing field as Brazil is considered as one of the largest exporter of manufacturing goods. In addition to this, the above tables also highlights that there has been rise in the RCA of Argentina against European nations compared to other nations in the word that highlights it is one of the strongly growing economy in the European region (Khobai and Mavikela 2017).

Table 8: Geographical pattern of trade
Source: (Wits.worldbank.org. 2018)
Considering the above table it can be seen that historically Argentina has been indulged in trading with the European nations as well as South American nations. As it can be seen, during the 1963, Italy was the largest trade partner of Argentina and when it comes to latest period, then it can be seen that Italy has lost its trade with the Argentina (Shahbaz et al. 2017). Considering the Brazil, it can be seen that, it was always there in the top ten trading partner’s list which makes it an all-weather friend of the Argentina. As it can be seen, with the comparative advantage of production in agricultural products, Argentina is historically indulged with the trading with USA. One of the latest addition of the top ten trading partner’s list of Argentina is India because of the comparative advantage in production of wheat and pulses. Though India itself is an agriculture based economy, yet, Argentina has comparative advantage in production of the wheat out of corn that satisfies the Hacker Ohlin theory (Campos et al. 2016).
