The Potential Impact of 3D Printing Technology on the Hospitality Industry

The Digital Revolution is not limited to the past – we should expect changes to continue for the foreseeable future. The aim of this assessment is for you to explore how IT might change a particular industry in the future, based on current trends and upcoming technologies.

For this assignment, you need to create a short video. There are many different tools available to help do this; Windows Movie Maker is available in the labs. It is also acceptable to perform a single-take video using a smart device or webcam.

Your topic must be automatically generated, based on your student ID. Please use the Topic Generator link in Moodle, and choose only one of the topics available.

Topics are of the form:

“The potential impact of {Technology} on {Industry or Activity}”.

Not all options are strictly technologies – some are applications of technology

Create an ePortfolio page which you will use to submit your work. Make sure you keep the page

private – you do not need to set the visibility of your ePortfolio to public for this assessment task. Access the Topic Generator through Moodle, and choose one of the available topics.

The first step to creating your video and report is to explore both the technology and the industry, to understand the potential impacts.

Write a short description of the technology and the industry (150-300 words each), and add both to your ePortfolio page. You may use any relevant sources, including websites, blogs, tweets, journal articles and textbooks. Ensure you reference any sources appropriately.

For your topic, list at least three ways the technology may change or disrupt the industry. Include this list on your ePortfolio page.

If you are having trouble, remember that this is a creative task – it’s ok for your ideas to be 10 or 30 years in the future. The more you can come up with at this stage the better, even if you think your ideas are completely implausible.

Some hints:

  • Consider the impact of the technology on the people in the industry; will it make their lives easier or harder?
  • Can you draw parallels to other industries where your technology may have had impact?
  • Are there other technologies you’re aware of that might, together with your chosen technology, have a stronger combined impact?
  • Creative thinking requires a dedicated block of time and the freedom to play around with ideas. Don’t leave it to the last minute!

Once you have brainstormed a number of impacts, choose one to focus on for the next two assignment parts. Review the rest of this assignment specification before choosing.

Choose one technology impact from the previous exercise, and identify at least four factors or constraints that make this impact possible, or which might prevent it occurring.

Frame these within Lawrence Lessig’s regulations – Market, Law, Architecture (Physical/Natural) and Norm(Social/Ethical). Include them in your ePortfolio page.

At least one of the factors or constraints should be ethical in nature.

You may choose to identify one factor or constraint for each of Lessig’s categories, or have multiple in one category. For example, it is ok to have three Market constraints and one Norm constraint.

Identify one process within your industry or field that would change as a result of your chosen impact.

Some hints to identify processes:

  • Consider processes in acquisition, manufacture, supply, support, staffing, and communication
  • Write a brief use case – like a case study but focussing on interactions and processes
  • Try searching! For example, “business processes in ticket sales” (but use your chosen business). Don’t just copy an existing diagram

For this process, determine:

  • Events;
  • Activities or Tasks;
  • Decision points;
  • Actors (people and/or objects);
  • Outcomes

Refer to lecture materials and readings for descriptions of these terms.

It is acceptable and expected that you make a number of assumptions about the process, but these should be explicitly included in your description. What are you basing your understanding on?

Include justification for why these components are affected by your specific technology.

Use process model diagrams to support your description – one before and one after the change.

These need to be detailed enough to show the change in processes, but not so detailed that the changes are hard to spot. The purpose of your model here is to show the impact of the technology on the business process; let that guide your level of detail.

Depending on how you envision your video, it may be worth creating a plan and a script. Some people are comfortable doing unscripted video, if this applies to you this part is optional.

There are several ways to plan your video, common approaches are writing scripts and/or storyboards. A script lists the words to say in your video, but also may include directions such as what to show on screen or how to act. A storyboard is a series of sketches showing how shots are framed. There are plenty of resources online to help you create a script or a storyboard.

Create a script or storyboard to help you plan your video.

The Potential Impact of 3D Printing Technology on the Hospitality Industry

Hospitality industry details a very broad category of genres within the service sector that extends from lodging, catering, event planning to theme parks, travelling and other fields within tourism (Kandampully, Zhang & Bilgihan, 2105). It is a very broad firm that is witnessing major changes and different people from different regions, race, culture and preference are its customer. Hence, the industry is in need to maintain a changing trend to sustain itself. 3D printing technology can offer its assistance in offering the industry with a changing trend according to the customer. The 3D printing is any process where the material is solidified or joined under the machinery control for the development of a 3D object (Chin & Wu, 2015). The technology has left its impact in different industries from manufacturing to construction, food and others. Hence, an assessment of the technology’s impact on the hospitality industry is a dire discussion topic and the paper aims to fulfil this gap.

The potential impacts of the 3D Printing in the hospitality industry has been listed as follows:

  1. It will benefit in offering the customers with their preferred objects from food to decoration and others within minutes.
  2. The food industry which is also a parallel to the hospitality industry have greatly been benefited by the technology and will also benefit the discussed industry.
  • 3D printing and data analytics together will enhance the impact because the people from different race region and other similar features can be analysed and accordingly their preference could be evaluated before their arrival. The necessary changes will be made which will offer the customers a sense of importance and in the process will benefit the business.
  1. The restriction on the use of data analytic without consent of the data owner will act as a constraint because only a generalised preference could be evaluated and specific preference could not be identified.
  2. The high cost and need for specialist of the 3D printer will act as a constraint for impact.
  3. The bulky size of the 3D printer and non-portability will also act as a constraint for impact in tourism hospitality.
  4. The use of data or specifying people based on their region, race, caste and other similar factors for business purpose is a major ethical violation and needs to be considered.

Actors: Hospitalist, Customer, Chef

Event: Customer books online order, makes necessary preparation, develops food, makes necessary decoration according to customer.

Activities: Online booking, making preparation for food, collects all resources, development of food, decorative item collection, decoration.

Decision points: availability of resources, development process known, decoration.

Outcome: Customer is satisfied.

The customer places order and the decision is first made whether or not all the items for the development of food is available if not the order needs to be cancelled. After the items are made available the concern of the skills is tested whether or not the food can be developed by the chef if not the order needs to be cancelled. After the food is developed the need for decoration is analysed which includes the availability of decorative items if not the decoration is cancelled completing the process. If the decorative items are available, the decoration is made which offers a sense of importance and satisfaction to the customer.

With the 3D printing the food delivery process in the hospitality industry changes completely. After receiving the order, the item if not available then they are developed using the printer. After the items is collected the decision of food development skill is not crucial because the printer can collect the recipe from online sources and develop it accordingly. The decoration items can also be availed by the 3D printer, if they are unavailable. Hence, the decoration can also be made readily, in the process having a satisfied customer without investing much effort in making the necessary preparation. The diagram attached below acts as a reference to it.

Hello everyone, this is [name of the student].

I welcome you all to a session where we are going to discuss about the potential impact of 3D printing in the hospitality industry.

The industry is one of the vast industries because of the multiple branches it had

From tourism, to hosting and catering along with several other branches. Hence, it becomes crucial to adopt disruptive technologies to keep the customer satisfied.

The crucial importance of the customer satisfaction could be understood by the fact that customer satisfaction is the primary objective of the word hospitality.

Hence 3D printing can assist the industry in attaining the objective with ease and comfort.

The technology is known for joining or solidifying resources to develop objects.

The people from different places, regions, races and other similar categories have different choices and preferences which is very difficult for the industry to cope up with.

The difficulty is associated due to the fact that different choice will need different items, food and surrounding to satisfy the customers which is extremely difficult if with every customer the firm had to buy new items.

Hence, 3D printers can assist in attaining the discussed objective.

It can prepare a new food (that is desired by the customer), the decorative items can also be developed with ease.

Hence, depending upon the preference of the customer the technology can offer different items in a matter of minutes.

Hence, offering a satisfied customer which in turn will improve the productivity of the firm.
