Manager at global level
Global management is considered as way through which organization manages its business at international level, which also includes practices related to sales, marketing, hiring and finance. With the development of technology world is connected in better way, it results that there are number of organization which grab the opportunity and conduct their business operations at global level.
Global management combines knowledge related to business, culture, history and social practices which help the companies in find their niches in the international community of business and it successfully work with other cultures also. As global manager, individual is not only responsible to understand the principles of business but also under obligation to understand the local customs, professional life and regional policies of the country in which organization wants to conduct its business (Learn.org, n.d). There are number of companies who also look for managers who can speak more than one or two languages and possessed the experience of conducting operations in more than one country, and also those who can move from one location to another location.
This essay defines the global management and global manager by using the Grounded Theory research and this research is supported by the Formative Assessment ‘Manifesto’ framework, and Plato’s Café dialogue for the purpose of highlighting key issues faced by global mangers in next 10-15 years. This paper also highlights the terms related to global management and being a global manager and changes occurred in the current approach. Lastly, paper is concluded with brief conclusion and recommendations.
Manager at global level:
Global manager is recognized from the nature of the work done by the manager, typically in the organization related to global operations. Global manger possessed the capability the mange the complex business operations that are conducted across the diverse cultures and time zones. Global manager can be the individual who is living and working outside the nation, but this is not happen on continuous basis. Generally, Global managers play three prototypical roles in a global organization and these roles are (HEC, n.d.; Barlett, 2003):
- Global business and product-division managers, and in this managers are responsible to handle global strategic positioning and asset co-ordination in the organization.
- Country managers are responsible to link the operations conducted at local level with the global business objectives of the organization.
- Last are worldwide function managers, and in this role manager help leverage knowledge and innovations in the important functional departments of the organization.
These three roles played by global managers clearly show that individual must have knowledge and experience to conduct global work. It can be said that global experience cannot be gathered through exclusive event of expatriation, but it can be done by focusing on the global activities and responsibilities.
Manifesto framework:
The Global Economic Ethic Manifesto (“Manifesto”) is the moral framework or code of conduct which is considered as both interactive and interdependent in nature and this framework is mainly used in economic functions of the main institutions of economic systems such as markets, governments, civil society, and supranational organizations. This framework is used to state the common fundamental vision for the purpose of considering legitimate and fair economic activities.
Manifesto framework includes five principles which were accepted universally, and these principles include principle of humanity, basic values related to non-violence, basic values related to justice and humanity, value related to tolerance, and value related to partnership and mutual stem. This framework mainly provides the ethical foundation for the purpose of assisting MNCs to meet these above stated principles by ensuring growth and profitability. This is the responsibility of the global manager to take decision and frame strategies after considering the above stated principles of manifesto framework (Hemphill, 2011).
Manifesto framework
Plato’s Café dialogue:
As stated by Plato, the big issue is Ideas or Idealism. In his philosophical theory related to idealism, Plato stated the idealism which is uncompromising in nature and this further states that experiential world (empirical reality) is not real. Plato considered the experiential world just appearance, and believes that ultimate reality is constitutive of abstract universal essences of things. This can be understood through example, which states that individual acts present in this world are not real but the essence of cat or cattiness is real. In other words, everything present in the world is not real, and they are just concrete objects.
This approach is not suitable in case of global management, because if global manager follow this philosophy of Plato then it becomes difficult for organization to survive in the world. As advocated by Plato, objects in the world are not real but global manager must frame the strategies after considering the fact that objects in the world is real (Nellickappilly, n.d.).
Challenges for global manager:
For the purpose of building the workforce whose members know every detail of the business and are flexible in nature take many years, and now it is not possible for MNCs to rely on few mangers who possessed multicultural experience or on few experts of the particular country for the purpose of getting success at global level. In other words, employees of the organization must possessed minimum level of international expertise, and also understand the differences in cultural that may affect the daily communications of business and working relationships (Cliff notes, n.d.).
Generally, global managers share common traits with their domestic counterparts. When organization hired a manager, it is necessary that manager possessed the technical knowledge and skills to perform particular task. For being a successful manager, individual must possessed intelligence and people skilled. Selecting managers for expatriate assignments includes checking of traits which must be possessed by the manager for success before adapting the new environments in the business.
It is necessary that global manager must understand and manage the overall operations of the business, and this management must not be conducted by manager only in context of challenges but also in opportunities. Now, even a small organization can conduct its operations in the complete world through internet and efficient transport system. However, organization must open its eyes and mind and must consider the whole world as a potential marketplace.
Later, multicultural interactions must be understood and accepted by the organization because it is not possible for organization to survive. From this perspective, cultural diversity in workforce is considered as asset and if this asset is used in proper way than organization can gain competitive advantage. It is the biggest challenge for global manger to hire and retain the workforce with cultural diversity.
Some other challenges faced by global managers in next 10-15 years are scarcity of resources, changes occurred in the environment, cultural changes, etc.. It must be noted that scarcity of resources and environment challenges are the issues on which customers are become increasingly sensitive, and these two issues cannot be overlook by the manager while conducting its operations at global level (Lynch, n.d.).
Plato’s Café dialogue
Other challenge faced by global manager is identification of need of customer, and develop such products and services that are able to satisfy the present and future needs of the customers, and it is considered as true cornerstone for any successful business. Global manger must develop a good relational marketing strategy for the purpose of achieving good results and retaining the customers. The other important area in which global manager must pay attention is the individual transactions, which means manager must establish lasting and satisfying relationships with their customers.
Other important challenge faced by global manager is proper management of internal resources, which mainly includes the management of human resources. Manager must focus on selecting capable staff members and recruit them. Managers are also responsible to motivate and involve the employees in their work.
Another challenge faced by manager is in the context of economic perspectives, and in this manager must be able to master the basic economic-financial instruments for the purpose of handling the business economic perspectives in proper manner. This can be understood through example, basics related to income statement, cash flow, etc (RBS, n.d.).
After considering the above facts it can be said that mangers must possess skills in different fields, and must understand the importance of honoring their technical skills and behavioral capabilities such as from teamwork to communication, and from negotiating skills to decisional ones.
Those managers who know the way through which work of the employees can be coordinated for the purpose of getting best from the employees by accompanied it with providing best high quality products and services in line with market trends, and through this managers are destined to make the future of their organizations (Future trend, n.d.).
Changes occurred in approach of global management:
Current approach of global management recognizing various trends which must be considered by the global manager before making any strategies for the future and some of these trends are stated below:
- Growth in urban population: as per the predication made by the United States, there is growth of 72% in urban population by the year 2050. This growth will mainly happen in the African and Asian countries, and rural population will be considered as fuel of this growth. Presently, there are no enough infrastructures which support this growth and help in forming new cities. However, it is necessary for organizations to consider this issue before planning and implementing strategies at global level.
- Global warming: as stated above, changes occurred in climate is the biggest challenge for the global manager in future, and organizations are considering the fact that changes occurred in climate is because of the increase in the sea levels.
Such changes in whether creates issues in traditional farming and also in meeting the increased demand of resources. Companies also consider this issue seriously and trying to respond in in their own manner. For example, Coco-Cola consider water sustainability threat for future sustainability. This issue has caused Coco-cola to start the initiative of water protection by returning the water to the National Forest System.
Changes occurred in the weather and population growth drive the scarcity of resources, and as per the prediction made by National Intelligence Council we’ll need 50% more energy, 40% more water and 35% more food by 2030. Because of these changes it is necessary that MNCs increase the regulation towards conservation and sustainability. These changes make the conflict around the world because scarcity of resources decreases the access to resources. Global manager must consider this fact before expanding their business and framing future strategies (ray, n.d.).
- Demographic changes: populations are increasing in case of developing countries, and in case of developed countries there is increase in their overall growth rate. This change directly affects the labor force which creates hurdles for MNCs to hire talent in developed countries. Almost 2/3rdCEO of MNCs show concerned related to skilled labors and almost 90% companies changed their strategies for the purpose of retaining and attracting the customers. This increase the responsibility of the global managers in maintaining the skilled labor in their organization for the purpose of meeting the objectives and goals of the organization (ERM, 2014).
Conclusion
After considering the above facts, it can be said that Global management is considered as way through which organization manages its business at international level, which also includes practices related to sales, marketing, hiring and finance. Global management combines knowledge related to business, culture, history and social practices which help the companies in find their niches in the international community of business and it successfully work with other cultures also. Global managers share common traits with their domestic counterparts. When organization hired a manager, it is necessary that manager possessed the technical knowledge and skills to perform particular task. For being a successful manager, individual must possessed intelligence and people skilled.
It is recommended to the global managers that they must consider the challenges stated above before formulating any strategies for the future.
