The local neighbourhood centre runs a school vacation program for teenagers at risk (see below). The program has been developed and run once previously, and the teenagers have been brought together for a focus group to get their feedback about the program. The following is the feedback:

  • The Tae Kwon Do was good but it only happened once; not enough time to learn anything.
  • Many of the activities were a bit ‘babyish.’ Activities more focussed upon teenage interests would be better.
  • Jumping castles are great fun – no matter what your age!
  • The girls liked the craft activities, but the boys did not like these at all. The boys preferred more sporting activities.
  • More outings away from the centre would be better.
  • Based upon this feedback, update the old program to incorporate the feedback from the teenagers involved.

Program Activities will be improved at the school vacation program. It has been seen that girls like craft activities but boys are not interested in the same so there will be sports activity for the boys. There will be more outdoor activities and it will happen quite often. The Tae Kwon Do will take place three times so that there is a learning opportunity for everyone.

TIA (Teenagers At Risk) School Vacation Program

The following is the written feedback from a suicide prevention program that was promoted and implemented with a group of people who have a mental health issue. Read the information and write a formal report (400 words) based upon it that covers the following.

Leith

What I liked about the program – The presenter named Jeremy was good in that he told us that he had depression and tried to take his life in the past, so I felt like that he understood us. It was good to have someone with a lived experience of mental health and suicide thoughts.

What I think could have been better – The presenter named Jenny did not know what she was talking about. People asked questions and she didn’t know the answers. She came across as uneducated on the topic. I felt really annoyed by the end of the training session.

Sam

What I liked about the program – The information provided was well researched. I like that they gave us handouts so we didn’t have to worry about taking notes. There were not enough handouts however and Lilly had to go without – she had to look at mine. She was very stressed about this.

What I think could have been better – I think there could have been more practical sessions. The general information sessions and PowerPoints were good, but it would have helped me more to be able to practice the deep breathing exercises, and to practice thinking more positively when things turn out badly. Now I have to just go home and try to do it on my own without any help.

Kim

What I liked about the program – Nothing.

What I think could have been better – The food was awful. I hate the venue at the Pacific Hotel. The wait staff are ugly and rude. I would never come back to this hotel. There was only orange juice, not tomato juice. I went home hungry. It is not just me who thinks this; Judy thought the same, she just didn’t want to fill out the feedback form.

Ben

What I liked about the program – The examples of people who have tried to suicide and have afterwards been glad that it did not work. I stood up and gave my own similar experience, which I am sure would have been very beneficial for others to hear.

What I think could have been better – If there was more time for people like myself to share our experiences, and help others attending.

Ensure privacy and confidentiality of those involved is maintained:

  1. Summarise the participant feedback
  2. What other questions might have been helpful to ask participants?
  3. Based on the feedback below, what actions would you take to improve the program?
  4. What evidence exists for suicide prevention programs?
  5. How can a health and recovery continuum of care assist in the development of this program?
  6. How can this evidence be implemented to improve the program?
