Introduction to Mental Health Disorders

Mental disorder is a condition that affects person’s mental, social and behavioral activities. It is also a condition that affects person’s cognitive activities. Patients with mental health problems need to be handled with a special care, as they are dangerous. If not handled with care, they can harm someone. In this case consume centered nursing practice is prioritized, whereby evidence based practice is used. Evidence based practice is used mostly in psychological treatment. Considering that mental disorders affects cognitive and behavioral activities of a patient, psychological treatment involves therapies of behavioral and cognitive activities since they involve symptoms. Evidence base practice is used in both cognitive and behavioral therapies although the method is not common especially to the public. Evidence based practice in the case of mental disorders helps clinical expertise to support the process of patient care. In evidence based practice patients are involved in decision making by psychologists before they make their final decisions. Collaboration is important in nursing of mental disorders. This is whereby psychologists and consumers come together to discuss the process of treatment and care for people with mental problems. Collaboration ensures that there is no criticism, and that all expertise involved are aware of patient’s progress of treatment.

There are five core principles of collaborative care. They include; evidence based care, patient centered care, population based care, accountable care and measurement based treatment to target. Collaborative care principles work hand in hand and do not make sense in absence of one. For a psychologist to meet his or her goals there is need to be involved in collaborative health care (Oades, Crowe, and Nguyen, 2008). Each practitioner has to possess his or her own virtual in order to work in collaboration with other practitioners and also their consumers of mental illness. some of these individual virtual needed include; honesty, faithfulness, obedience, patience and others. Collaborative care enhances team work within a department in order to come up with positive outcome.

Consumers, being the key subject of the topic, are the ones in consideration. They give important information on their progress, that is their recovery process (Cleary, Horsfall, O'Hara?Aarons, and Hunt, 2013). This information is usually important since it increases the knowledge of the healthcare staff, who include the nurses and the managers. The seniors therefore become able to determine the quality of job and services rendered to consumers. Through collaboration. The nurses also get time to speak freely with them.

Using Evidence-Based Practice in Mental Health Treatment

Since information is power, good feedback from consumers create a good face for the health facility. They advertise the hospital. or rather health center to the public, thus making it easy for the rest of the people to access the facilities. The relationship also matures, to an extend that only virtues must be practiced (McCann, Baird, Clark and Lu, 2008). For example, the consumers tend to socialize with the doctors, to an extend of disclosing other peoples’ secrets. When it gets to this far, the nurses may get to a risk of being laid off from their jobs. They therefore have to limit the extent to which they interact with patients. Patients are sensitive, though always right, and should therefore be attended well. Sensitive information should however not be left in the hands of patients. This should be confidential, thus kept secretive.

Confidential information includes the diagnosis and results of a consumer. Since many family members of the consumers have some myths and misconceptions about mental disorders, they may spread a rumor of the same, which may affect the patient to the negative (Craven, and Bland, 2009). The results should therefore be kept secret, and revealed to only the next of keen of the customers, who must remain patient until the consumer gets better, or rather recovers.it is therefore the responsibility of the councilors, or the assigned people in that sector, to build the people mentally. The patients who hear their people talk about witchcraft may be affected negatively by the myth, which gets to an extend of worsening the condition of the consumer.

The counselors, are assigned the duties of relaxing the minds of the consumers, who get over the thought within a certain period of time. It has been found out that that consumers who are handled with care, and given advice accordingly recover within a short period of time. The councilors however, must have all the virtues, to create a better and conducive environment for the consumers (Bennetts, Cross, and Bloomer, 2011). Kindness must be applied, since, a mentally challenged person may sometimes become violent. The councilors must therefore attend to the consumer in a smooth manner. These kind of people must be taken care of until they recover. The councilors are therefore required to be patient. Patience pays, and so patient councilors see a positive change in the condition of the consumer day after day.

 Mental health care practitioners must be faithful to their consumers. Where faithfulness is enabled between a counsellor and a consumer there is possibility of gathering enough and clear information (Scott, Naismith, Whitwell, Hamilton, Chudleigh, and Hickie, 2009). Therefore, it will be easy for the counselors to monitor and understand the gradual change in their consumer’s health.  Counsellors must be honesty in dealing with patients with mental disorders. Honesty will enable them to keep their promises to their consumers.

The Importance of Collaboration in Mental Health Nursing

Evidence based practice enables counselors to use researched evidence to treat their consumers. Considering that consumers mental disorder requires Psychological Treatment, psychologists requires evidence from researches which are known to work effectively in their dealing with consumers of mental disorders (Galavan, 2017). The benefit if evidence based practice, as a principle of collaborative care enables counsellors to apply the research evidence in dealing with both cognitive and behavioral therapies.

Patient centered team care is a principle of collaborative care whereby the consumer of mental disorder is the key subject. Mental health providers work hand in hand with their consumer to ensure that they give the best treatment to them. This creates an enabling environment for good health care to consumers. since the consumer is centered, he or she can directly communicate and collaborate with his or her health care providers (Tanzman, (2008)). Due to availability of an enabling environment counselors are able to come up with new experience about their professions. New experiences motivate counselors and through that they also become eager to know more about mental disorder health care.

Measurement based treatment to target involves mental health providers taking measurement of changes occurring to their consumers within a period of time. In measured based treatment to target principle of collaborative care, evidence base tools are used (Galavan, 2017). Mental health care providers set their goals, which they expect to have met in a certain period of treating their consumers. The record of their treatment is conserved. where the consumers are showing few or no changes in their health, measurement based treatment to target enables the mental health care providers to making change to in their treatment to their consumers to ensure that they meet their goals.

Population based care involves team work among mental health care providers. Record are kept of the progressive treatment of a consumer. In population based practice, team members are clearly stated, and the record of their treatment to a particular consumer also recorded. Population based care enables practitioners to track chances occurring to consumers after a given period treatment (Achenbach, 2016). In population based care, the mental health care providers are required to clearly understand the need for collaborative care in treatment of consumers of mental disorders.

In accountable care principle of collaborative care, the mental health providers are expected to be accountable for the quality of treatment they offer to their consumers. The practitioners are accountable of their consumers’ health changes in the course of treatment (Veseth, Binder, Borg, and Davidson, 2017). Accountable care enables the mental health care providers to be serious in their work while providing services to their consumers, keeping in mind that they are accountable of the health changes which are going to occur to their consumers.

The Five Core Principles of Collaborative Care

Therefore, collaborative care is very important aspect in treatment of consumers of mental disorders. This is because collaborative care enables team work among mental health care providers themselves and also their consumers (Schwartz, Del Prete-Brown, Pacino, Nisky,  LaMarco, Rotuno,  Kalnicki and Rogers,2016). Collaborative care enables keeping of records of heath changes of consumers. It enables practitioners to work hard toward achieving their goals, which involves seeing their consumers’ improve in their health. Collaborative care also ensure that consumers get the best treatment which they require since team work is enhanced. Collaborative care ensures that all detail about consumer’s health changes is kept in records, for future reference. It also enables use of research evidence in provision of mental health care, and this ensures that consumers get quality treatment.

Through familiarizing myself with the consumer’s experiences of living with mental health illness, I have been able to develop my nursing practice in many ways. It has enable me to be eager to learn more and more. I have been able to participate actively in my classroom more than before. Consumer’s experiences of living with mental illness has enabled me to start aiming my visions and mission higher. It has empowered me to study hard in order achieve my visions and missions, since it has made me to be determined (Kang, and Ridgway, 2008). It has enable me to start seeing nursing as a profession in a different perspective.

Through consumer experiences of living with mental illness, I have understood that nursing care is a profession that require more research in order to deliver quality treatment to consumers (Drake, Deegan and Rapp, 2010).  I have been able to attend my classes regularly since have found nursing study to be enjoyable, when I have experience. It has also opened up my mind, such that I can easily and well understand lectures while being taught. Through consumers’ experience of mental illness health illness, I have been motivated to further my studies and become a doctor nurse, such that I can take a place of a doctor is absence of a doctor in my hospitals where I will be working. It has enabled me to be eager to know more about mental illness.

In conclusion, consumers of mental health require special care which is enhanced through team work among the mental health care providers.  Collaborative care is an important aspect in health care of a consumer of mental health illness. There is need for practitioners to keep records of health chances of their consumers. It is important for counselors to involve consumers of mental health illness in decision making before starting and during the process of treatment. While handling case of mental health illness, practitioners are required to be accountable of their process of treatment to their consumers. Mental health providers are required to employ some virtues while dealing with consumers of mental health illness. Through being informed about consumer’s experience of living with mental health illness, nursing practitioners get to develop morale in their profession as future nurses.
